Triathlon - No wetsuit allowed...what to wear?

Let me start by I have never done a tri and I'm sorry if these are stupid questions. My wife and I are doing our first tri in June. Just a sprint as that's all she is up for. I already have an Oly distance scheduled in July after that, so I guess a sprint will be a stepping block for me.

It is listed on the website for registering that no wetsuits are allowed. First question is why? We are in Dallas and the race is nearby so it will be plenty warm, I'm just curious. Next question, is what should we wear? Looking for info for male and female.

You might try a tri-suit from a place like Desoto Sports: http://www.desotosport.com/products/racing.asp

I wear one of these and it fits comfortably. In general these kinds of garments fit fairly snugly, and I've found one or two from other companies with unfortunately placed seams.

Other vendors make them as well, and there are plenty of online tri shops (even a recent thread here on them).

The general view was that for anything over oly they chaff, I still think some body glide would help with that, as having to deal with a shirt would be a PITA

I've never used a wetsuit... I wear a bathing suit for the swim, then add whatever I need for the next two legs. In San Diego, that meant just bike shorts, but in Kirkland, WA, that meant a lot more (brrrr!). If it's your first one, and you're not sure you/your wife will stick with it, I'd just go low-tech. Tri-suits are fairly pricey if you're not sure you'll get your money's worth.

i'd wear a pair of tri shorts. They're like bike shorts but with a little thinner chamois, that doesn't soak up water so much. Then put on a top after the swim. Either that or a tri suit, which is on aone piece outfit, incorporating the tri shorts and a top.

You wouldn't want to wear a wetsuit anyway. A little mis-timed flatulence and...

Thanks for all the advice. We checked out a few tri-shorts today out our LBS and they are reasonably priced so we'll probably go that route.

I'm still curious why there would be no wetsuits allowed. Any particular reason?

Wetsuit use is based on the water temperature. USAT rules are that water must be below 78 degrees on the day of the race to use wetsuits...
