I am mostly a roadie but I started out on a great GT Karokoram about 15 years ago (and still have it, I would never sell such a great bike!) and was thinking of making it into a single-speed winter machine for the upcoming brutal Toronto winter. I saw these rims on craigslist and wondered if these rims are any different from a regular 26' mountain bike rim as they are listed as double track rims. I have a sweet Surly single-speed hub that I think might work well with these rims, am I okay to buy them? Thanks for any help.

SunRingle makes a double and single track rim. Both are good rims but the double tracks are wider. You would need to fit a wider tire on there and I do not think your current frame will handle the wider tire. I would say nothing smaller then a 2.3. Well the 2,3 might work in your frame.

Ah, so they are made for downhill bikes? Is that right?

Forgot to mention,
You can get a set of 32h Single tracks from cambriabike.com for 60$ and those would suit you better and they can handle the same abuse as the double tracks.

Correct. The rims are made for the dh/freeide bikes but as I said, single tracks can handle the same abuse but you can run a smaller tire, down to a 2.0. You could use a 1.9 tire but that would be pushing it.

Mag 30's! Basically the same rim except a tiny bit stronger.

30's would be to wide for his needs.
