Can canti bosses be mounted on a frame by a method other than welding?

I believe they're typically brazed onto steel frames and welded onto titanium and aluminum. I believe they must be part of original construction on carbon fiber.

If I recall, I recently saw clamp-on canti bosses that someone posted here in one of the forums.

that would scare the heck out of me - i can't believe you could get them tight enough not to rotate.
maybe if the bosses mounted to a bridge that bolted to the caliper brake hole and then clamped around the frame.
hey, that's an idea! it'd be pretty cheap and universal. not sure what kind of demand there would be, though.

I remember way back when there were "Moots Mounts", which were fairly scary-looking clamp-on canti bosses.
It's a trip to think that they were brought to you by the same folks who are now peddling megabuck titanium bikes.

I think I might just do that. I want to build up a 700c cx bike but don't necessarily want to run out and buy a whole new bike. Plus, making it is more fun anyway. Any other testimonials on these?

The advantage of cantilevers is that they work okay on a bike with a lot of clearance (for a cx bike, that's clearance for mud build up). It is silly to install cantilevers on a frame that will accomodate caliper brakes -- it sounds like that is the case in your project. The bolt-on bosses are a good alternative if this is what your frame currently uses: http://aebike.com/site/page.cfm?PageID=30&SKU=BR1044
You can cx okay on a road bike frame, but mud clearance may be an issue depending on where you are, and pedal/bottom bracket clearance (above the ground) will likely put some limits on your offroad technique.

Depending on where you live having canti bosses brazed on might not be that expensive. I paid 15$ cdn each for mine and then another 60$ for a powdercoat. The problem you might have in using a modern road frame is that the clearance in the rear stays might be too tight to allow for cantis or v-brakes. This would also be a problem if you used an adapter, I think. I would'nt worry about the bottom bracket height. I think this issue tends to be overstated esp. as you will be using larger tires. That said, make sure your frame can clear the kind of tires you want to run.
