I have a Free agent Flying fortress and i want a new sprocket. I want one of those really small ones to get good clearance. Could I even put one on my bike? Or would it not fit?Is there a sizing rule or something?

you could get a small one but youll be pedaling really fast and going walking speed unless you get the right freewheel(for 36T or bigger) or casette hub(33-25T or less). for a 36 tooth sprocket you'll need a 13t freewheel to keep the 44/16 ratio. If you have the money you can buy a casette hub and go really small. a cheap casette hub would cost around $90. A 13T freewheel would be $20.

why would you want a small sprocket? i got one because i didn't want it to hit on crooks, but i doubt you will be busting any out.

Divide the number of teeth in your front by the number of teeth in your rear. If you change the number of teeth in the front, your gear ratio will change unless you also change the number in the rear. And I know what you're gonna ask next, the answer is NO, you will NOT be able to go smaller than 15t in the rear without a new hub, unless you've already got a cassette or flip-flop rear.

Probably to save weight... but with a frame like, it wouldn't even matter.

I want one to get better clearance. I have a 13t cassette free wheel.And a 36tX180L sprocket. What ever that means. you have a cassette, so you can go smaller. call up free agent and ask them if the cassette is compatible with other 1 pc drivers

Cassette freewheel, that's new. Why do you need more clearance if you are running 36-13 allready? Honestly? Clearance for what? Clearance to look cool?

I agree. I think when Rick had his accident back in '95??, they removed a portion of his brain to make room for his facial reconstruction. I feel guilty saying this, because I met him a few years before his accident and he was an awesome guy to ride with - super friendly, positive and actually good (back then).
As a bike shop owner, I have even talked to the VP Marketing of Free Agent to find out why such a crappy rider who doesn't represent anything that relates to riders these days is still making a living off of being a self proclaimed "bmx legend". He basically said "Rick is a media ***** - do you know how much we would have to pay for that coverage?" He is apparently as clueless as Rick himself.
that is another thing. Us riders decide who the legends are. I have NEVER heard anyone use his name in that reference unless it was followed with serious laughter. Anyways, Free Agent does have some bikes that offer great value for kids looking to enter our sport. Hopefully they have a sense of humour about it when they become hard-core and have to admit to owning a Free Agent once upon a time.

Since Ride US is doing Rick Thorne for their next "ask a pro a question" section, I made sure to ask him how it feels to be the most ridiculed rider in the BMX world, beating even Ice Money. I also asked him if he's gotten his rollbacks dialed in yet.
