I am speechless.

What in the heck are you talking about?

I saw a suped up civic tonight and the turn signals were dark blue.
This can hardly be legal, but the amazing thing was that the idiot was actually USING the things.
Unbelievable.

There used to be a luxury symbol of a blue dot in the middle of a tail/brakelight. I see one every so often on a cutom Harly-Davidson or custom fabricated motorcycle. My Dad had a set off a '49 Mercury on his '49 Ford panel truck.

I figured it out.

He's hoping his speaker box is throwing off enough vibrations it's acting as a cloaking device.

Ricers and their dumb modifications. I saw a maxima the other day while taking the bus from NY, and it's rear lights had white bulbs instead of red... smart guy, huh? Don't want the red lights like everyone else, I suppose. I've seen people get away with clear and blue, and you know why? Because it "looks better in the light housing".

Valuable? Almost as valuable bicycling advocacy/safety information as nit picks over formatting.

I've been seeing more of those around here lately too. And yes (at least in Kentucky) they're HIGHLY illegal. But that doesn't stop the rednecks from using them on their taillights AND headlights.

Actually not a luxury item at all. They a re a safty device. They dont reflect sunlight nearly as much as a standard tail light lens. As for the purple/blue taillight lens thats probably legally questionable and likly doesnt help for safty. If in infact doesnt reflect sunlight i say more power to em.

Blue/off-colour turn signals are one of the mods I most like to seem because, as you mentioned, in order to show them off, they have to USE THEM.
Second favorite mod is when they put the fire extinguisher on the windshield frame. Because you never know when something is going to burst into flames...

Keeping up with the theme of this advocacy thread - My favorite mod is a rack of forward facing fog lights mounted on a bar above the roof of SUV's and PU's.
What happens to visability if they are actually turned on in a fog? I assume their real purpose is to kill bugs in the summertime.

And to reduce gas mileage.

Yeah, the rally bar should be filled with a mix of spots and floods aimed ahead and out from the vehicle, and also up into the tree canopy so you can steer using the forest as a visual steering aid to 'forward look' at the road ahead.
No foggers on top.
I had a car burst out in flames when I was driving once. My extinguisher was under the seat, I think.

i've seen it once before. and it was really hard to see too - i could not tell if the guy was trying to turn across my lane or just slowing down for some reason. it's wasn't until i was about 50 feet away that i could see the light blinking.
Those blue lights don't fly here in CA. They are for police use exclusively and will certainly get you noticed by your LEO's. Not so much a safety issue but to identify police vehicles.
But hey, they sell them at most speed shops, so it's OK! Of course, there is a small disclaimer: "May not be legal for street use."

I saw a set of those in Beverly Hills the other day. It bothers me because when I look in my rearview and see blue I think cop. It seems strange that you can sell something like that, but it's illegal to actually use it. I don't think you need turn signals on your autocross car, so when exactly are you supposed to legally use these things?

Cop cars used to have them-- they were exclusively reserved for cop cars-- and hot-rodders used to make the mod. One of the reasons cops could find to pull them over for.
Not long ago, I was passed by a lowered VW Jetta that was covered in some form of asian writing and graphics. The first thought that crossed my mind was that the theme of the car must be "Countrys that USA defeated in WWII". Not sure what colors his turn signals were.

Interesting observation.
Was he running Pirellis too?

I think the cars with full limousine tinting on every window of the car but the windshield is the best idiot driver modification. Not only can't you see the driver, but you have to assume they sure aren't looking at you from inside that little coffin-mobile. These people will go to the pit of hell reserved for people who don't turn their headlights on when it's dark or raining.
Just as blue lights are illegal in most states, so are tinted front driver and passenger side windows.
I figured it out.
Good for you and your psychic abilities. Maybe you should get a job with Dionne Warwick.

I've had two turn signal related observations in the past few weeks:
1. When a car has backed into a parking space and is ready to pull out, you cannot see their tail lights and can't be sure when/if you should ride past them.
2. I've seen at least two cars with very small turn signals, mounted on the inside edge of their headlights (but that I mean above the license plate). I think they come standard and they're very hard to notice.
