Mountain Biking - Face mask that warms air?

Pretty simple, I'm looking for a face mask that covers only the mouth and warms the air as it enters so you don't get that nasty cold stinging lung feeling. Whatcha got?

A scarf. Look at REI.com. They have many different types of face masks designed for this purpose.

Cigarettes?

A fleece neck gaiter is very convenient. It can easily be pulled up to your eyes or down under your chin if need be. it's more convenient that a scarf and more versatile than a mask.

I wear a headgator when its below 30f but only to cover my neck and ears.

if you are getting "the cough" try blowing your nose. its postnasal drip, not the cold air in the lungs more than likely. I usually just do the snotrocket occasionally and dont get that cough anymore unless I dont blow my nose

What are your feelings about those bacalavas(sp)?

I have a few different ones of different weights. I like them (balaclavas) a lot until I really need to get something over my face. They kind of distort and don't work as well as the neck gaiter when you pull them up to cover your face.

When it's very cold I wear a balaclava with the neck gaiter over it to pull up. When I'm going fast enough I can actually pull the neck cover under my glasses to have no exposed skin. When I am going slow off road I can pull it down under my chin. Most of the time I just have it over my mouth with my nose exposed.

Let's call them head covers from now on ! :)

Sounds pretty cool. Did anyone actually try these? Seems pretty bullsh*t.

I tried some different face masks. How do open them up when you stop and are hot? Then you need to cover up again for some speed. Some of them do not have anything over your mouth to warm the air when you want to.

If you go quickly on the road and then slowly off road you need to stop and take off the mask sometimes.
They are not adjustable for the amount of effort (heat produced) or the wind chill (speed).
I found them lousy compared to a fleece neck gaiter. The gaiter you can put up and down while riding to adjust as needed.

One shown down, one up with goggles. Takes about one second.

It doesn't even get cold at 40 degrees.

A single layer of fleece is good down to about 15-20 F. And up to 50F.

Yeah, it was a joke. I assume it would be warmer than the normal air since the air is going through the buring cigarette.

I went riding this morning. the temp was in the 20s ad I had no problem with the cold air making me cough. I was riding a trail id never ridden before so the steep climbs were more harsh than normal because i wasnt sure of the right gearing at times. I was out of breath on several occasios but never had to cough. the trail started with a 1/2 mile steep climb so I had to warm up while climbing.
I snort saline drops , then blow my nose before I ride. Ive never needed a face mask for the cold by doing this, even when the temps were in the single digits and I was coming from a warm truck.

Hey, noticed you were in Colonial Heights, right near where I am in Richmond. Was wondering what trail you went for this morning. I'd probably like to scout it out too!

it was Pocahontas. the Exploration Trail at the back of the park combined with Fendly Station trail. Im still rehabing a knee so Ive been real limited on the technical stuff. they are double track but they also have steep ups and downs for building up my leg strength again .
thats the first time Ive hit anything with hills other than Battlefield Park in Petersburg in a while.
I got above 28mph on some of the downhills while just coasting and had to use the granny gear on the climbs. the turns are tight for double track, especially above 25mph.
I hit 1000 miles this year(in Oct. I think) so far off road so Im spending the rest of the year exploring new trails and traking it easy on my knees as they have developed bursitis this year real bad.
