Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Frame tape

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Hey all
I wanna tape up the logo on my frame (black Iro). Wondering if its ok to just use electrical tape or will that gummy stuff eventually eat up the paint? Any other suggestions? (handlebar tape)
electrical tape that ****
The solution is to buy chrisj's Pogliaghi off him, 2am ;)

That tape will eventually eat away your paint and your flesh. Look out.
use an old innertube if youre worried about the finish, but you'll probably get more nicks and scrathes elsewhere on the frame anyways.

i used electrical tape. no problems.
oh, except for what BT said.
now i'm a skeleton.
ignore everything i said, except the first two sentences. and the last one. and that one. and that. and that...
I suggest you not tape and (i)roll with pride!

If you use electrical tape, at least use decent stuff made by 3M instead of generic whatever- it's got more stretch and won't leave your bike all covered in residue when you take it off.

I was going to suggest the opposite - I know that scotch 33+ leaves a hell of a lot of residue. The cheapo "Westape" stuff seems to not leave much at all.

that **** is dumb... why would you want to put ugly ass tape on a perfectly good bike?

If youre worried about scratches, dont ride it. They are going to happen. If you're worried about theft, electrical tape isn't going to deter anyone. If they steal huffys, they will steal your Iro if given half a chance. As far as aesthetics go, I find taping the frame to be very unpleasant.

Get some of this:

We used it on aircraft. It lasts forever, never gets hard, and has no residue(it sticks to itself).

id rather make my good looking bike look ****ty so people will hopefully just walk past it.
I dont tape over the name..its a giveaway that its prob. a good bike.. Id tape over everything so it reduces scratches dings and prevents rust that would happen because of the scratches. But hey.... im just anal.. :P

If they steal purple huffy skirtbikes from the 80s, how would alittle bit of tape change their opinion of your bike? the fact that its a stupid ass bike with no parts on it would be more of a deterrent than some tape.

None of my bikes have e-tape on 'em anyway, I'm more partial to stickers, bad paint jobs, or good locks.
I'm just confused as to why you're so dead set against the noble electrical tape.

I have no idea what you ride, I should have put that part in quotations.

If you ever try to sell a bike that has a lot of scratches on it the person tends to talk you down on price because of every little scratch. You could say Im just trying to hold the value of a bike.

hey, some people like to take care of their bikes more than others. wrapping the tubes is a very easy way to protect it.
by your logic:
if you're worried about bike maintenance, don't ride it!

Why would you chose a method to protect your bike that destroys the intrinsic aesthetic value of it?

All I'm sying is that a frame that is well used looks a sh*tton better than a frame wrapped in electrical tape.

I could care less if I get less cool points because its taped up. Cool points dont hold a bikes value. The fact its still in good shape does.

heres what i know- bikes with decal style logos and whatnot that are not clear coated over that are taped over may peel off-i wanted to tape a portion of the top and down tube of my frame- i ride in the city and park against meters amd humps-not wanting to destroy my decals i put saran wrap around frame tightly- it only takes a little bit- then wrapped it with gaffers tape finishing the ends with electrical tape so it wont peel when wet- it works well is durable and leaves no residue and the tape comes in a variety of wonderful colors for you non-aesthetes out there- sometimes a bike becomes more that a statement: sometimes it becomes a bike. everyone has their answers this is one of mine.
ah, hem... I also own a 2004 cannondale cyclocross that I've ridden in the city and it has these big freaking white letters over a perfectly lovely black frame, like the IRO -but more annoying.
The question is if you wrap for aethetics or insurance. I wrap my frame once every early spring and unwrap it for the cyclocross/winter season... that way it performs several functions:
1. it's less pretty and only the components give it away as being high value.
2. It still has a gorgeous paint job though I've ridden it into the ground. (unwrapping it is like getting a new bike!!!)
3. no annoying letters that get me into stupid conversations about manufacturers.
I use, and swear by, BONDAGE TAPE. It has NO sticky surface and adherese only to itself. If it gets frayed after mud, I will seal the end with industrial clear tape. It's thin, so I go around 2 or 3 times but it's worked beautifully each year. ypu can get it at most sex shops for between $4-$10. comes in black, red & pink.
I rock the black bondage tape. you can do whatever you want.

do you realize that unless you have every painted surface taped, you're gonna end up with two different colors when you finally take the paint off?
also, nail polish makes amazing touch up paint...
i had my say on taping frames on this forum a couple years ago...
i still think it's just as ridiculous
by the way, yellow, not picking on you, your post was just handy... cheers...

But if snobs can't immediately dismiss you via brandname, they might think you're riding a really spiffy fancy track-specific custom geometry japanahand-me-down with NJS-approved electrical tape and pay attention to you.
"Hey! Lookit me! I'm not just another johnny-come-lately with an affordable, sensible IRO frame, I'm riding THE MYSTERY BIKE!! I could even be mistaken for a messenger!"

I can see where electrical tape would protect the paint from scratches, but what's the point? It looks like hell, and making your bike look like hell all the time so it won't look like hell later makes no sense to me. I think the OP just wants to cover up the name because he doesn't like advertising on his bike. It still looks like hell, but I can respect that.

I find old BetaMax works best.
my vote is to get some black iro logos and put them on the frame. best of both worlds in my opinion. i actually kinda want to do that with mine now.

i don't know why but i have this image of a frame completely wrapped in cushy bar tape. it'b be all soft and cushy. if you're gonna do it, really do it.

I found electrical tabe useless, gets gouged too easily.
I use hockey tape, the stick shart type not the blade type.
Somebody once read a prop for hockey tape and bought blade tape.
Had a very sticky bike. :roflmao:
Wrong tape.
Cloth type tapes are better for hits (I mtb) and it kinda feels nice to grip for carrying the frame around.
Get some of this:

Oh ****, I have some of that in my shop at work(I work with aviation electronics). I used it as bartape once-worked really nicely.

Painter's Masking Tape. $3.00. Home Depot. Comes in colors ,no residue, looks like paint. Everybody thinks I powdercoated my Pista. One lbs mech said: " I didn't know Bianchi made 'em in blue this year." Tape. Protects. Resurrects. Gets Respect. When I finally post pics of this baby, your jaw is gonna drop like, what? How'd he do that?
Tape ain't gotta be ugly.
