Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - the broken thread

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
In honor of the broken C-Records from yesterday, what parts have -you- broken on your bike?

Um, my wife snapped her Ultegra rear der in half last week. I'm so proud of her! I think I'll rebuild her bike as a SS when she's not looking...

Very few parts... A stem, 2 spokes. That's all the parts that broke during riding in the last 20000 K. Weighing 130 pounds helps:D
i break a spoke on my front wheel fairly regularly... four since i got the bike in august... damn 28h radial lacing

various spokes.
snapped a toe clip, but that was my fault for not noticing how dead it was.
snapped a chain, but that was due to a drunken adventure with a chain breaking tool.
cracked a frame, but that was probably due to age.
bent an axle, but it was a suzue jr, so it was bound to happen sometime.
I really should just rebuild the wheel with a cross pattern but i'm worried about messing it up doing it by myself and too cheap to take it to the LBS for them to fix it

I think I've broken almost everything there is to break on a bike by now.

an axle. that's it. oh, no, i put a huge dent in a rim from running into a curb head-on while drunk...i was using clipless pedals, too, and did a flip and a half before landing on my face with bike, bent rim and all, laying on top of me.
i've broken myself a few times. when i'm riding, that counts as "something on the bike", right?

I had a bmx bike that I broke a couple times. THe first time was on the day that I learned to pro-hop... I did it all the way home from school... rather, half-way home from school, because I snapped the thing that goes from the top of the fork to your handlebars in half.
I ended up riding the bike for about 2 or 3 months without handlebars.
Then later, after fixing the handlebars, I was doing pro-hops again, and I snapped the bottom tube in half about two inches from where the fork goes through. There was nothing I could do to fix that problem.

the seat got blasted off the rails, and the rails did some damage to my person. i busted my face a little when my mouth hit the bars; i found a metal flake in my lip six weeks later
*it's hard to see from the photos, but the frame's a write-off: the rear triangle got mangled.

Did you get wedged in between two cabs? Good god... that looks -awful-

there's a thread somewhere... early may, in which i posted the day-of-manglage. basically, i was cut off by a cabbie (butthole #1) going for a fare. he cuts me off, and stops short. my options are 1) ram into his bumper and go over the bars into his rear window, or 2) try to get around his right side. option 2 involves traffic, this being First ave. in manhattan, but it shouldn't be a problem. problem is, my left pedal catches his bumper, and i go down. if that was all, it wouldn't have been a big spill. BUT, 2nd cabbie (butthole #2) is following waaay too close and too fast. he hits me pretty much as i hit the pavement, causing most of the damage you see. the police report faulted both cabs. personally, i fault butthole #1 more, but i'm not sure the law does. it wouldn't have happened had he not crossed two lanes and stopped short for a measly fare.
i spent a few hours in the ER (mostly waiting). had a nice laceration in my ass from one of the seat rails, dangerously close to my butthole. i swear, i wore diapers for like two weeks - it didn't want to stop bleeding. i had one tooth chipped (got that one crowned), and another had to be pulled as it was broken far up in the gum. i currently have a funny removable fake, until i go in and have the permanent one installed. dentistry is expensive, lemme tell ya.
i have a deposition sometime soon, my lawyer tells me. his prediction: a win. i got 'lucky' in the sense that i have witnesses, and the buttholes didn't leave the scene. so we'll see how it all works out.

yes, the FSM is all-knowing. and it's comforting to know that when i die, there's a stripper factory and a beer volcano waiting in the afterlife. :D

it most definitely could have been worse. luckily, i'm pretty much fine, and riding plenty.

If the FSM is all knowing, how come he doesn't know that we need stripper factories and beer volcanos in this life, too? Hmm?

you need to earn it, my friend. show your allegiance, and ye shall be rewarded. and don't question the FSM. 10 lashes from the noodly appendage ye shall receive!
If something dies from old age/heavy usage, I really don't mind. The worst is impulsive, self-inflicted damage. I stripped the alan wrench hole on my left-side pedal. I'd better learn to like eggbeaters, because that s**t is never coming out.

suzue jr, which (honestly... seems to be a right of passage around here) resulted in the breaking of my balls and the bending of wheel as I bounced off this and that attempting to stop.

That's a serious bend. I've bent and sheared crank spindles, but never a crank arm. I wish I had a picture of the last crank spindle I broke. It was about a hair's width from flaying my calf.
Tommasini frame at the headtube
Faggin frame at seatstay tie x 2 and at the dropout
A pedicab frame (multiple cracks due to pulling too many fatasses)
Like 5 1/8th inch chains while pedicabbing
Too many spokes to count on the pedicab
One SRAM chain on a fixie
Selle Italia Pro-link saddle at the rails - Ti rails.
Selle Italia Turbo at the plastic
Mavic touring rim - cracked in a bunch of spots (my fault sorta)
Cheapo ally stem - totally cracked
2 pairs of SPD pedals
A cheapo ally seatpost
ally chainring bolts
Too many cheap chainwhips
I think there's some more....can't remember right now.

fnb- hope you get your expenses paid, at least.
when i first started riding fixed, i noticed that i was missing a chainring bolt, so the next morning i decided to go to the bike shop and replace it. i got there before it opened, so i decided to ride around for a bit. while doing so, i lost another bolt, and then while i was riding down a big hill on 4th ave, i tried to stop and basically ripped my chainring off the crank and wrapped it around the bottom bracket. i avoided going over the bars by laying the bike down, and i had to take the entire chainring off before i could even wheel the bike 2 miles back to my apartment. lesson learned.
