Hi, im interested in purchasing my first road bike and was wondering if i should buy it new or second hand. Im on a 'limited' budget and i feel that i might be better to get a second hand bike of better quality than that of a brand new bike.

What are the the pros and cons of buying second?
And what should i look out for?

Second hand is a good way to go.
Watch out for any crash damage, esp a frontal collision. This usually shows up as a ripple in the paintwork at the top-tube/head tube junction.
Watch out for worn rims at the braking surface. Old cheap Shimano parts (eg STI levers) may be worn out.
Avoid carbon wheels (like spinnergy), go for standard spoked ones.
You should be able to get a bike in fairly new condition, just make sure it fits.
Last years models make good bargains new, esp if their transmission components have been superceeded.

One of the most important things about any bike you get is the fit. It's kinda like a pair of shoes. no matter how good they are or how nice they look if they don't fit... Now buying used can be a good thing or not depending on how well the bike was looked after. If you will need a new cassette, chain, and tires right off the bat, then maybe you made the wrong choice. If you know what to look for, or know someone who does know what to look for in a used bike who can help you, chances are you can find something you will be happy with for a good price. When I got my first road bike I knew diddly. I am glad I got it from a LBS, as they gave me instruction on fit, shifting procedures. do's and don'ts, and advice on lots of stuff. Now after years of ridding I feel better qualified to make a choice with regard to a used bike purchase. It's your money, and far be it from me to tell you what to do with it, good luck in what ever way you go. Phil

I would research fitting first;

It's way too easy to buy a bike that doesn't fit. Do your homework and then test ride a several bikes before buying.
