How to take apart a 96 record front hub, I like to see the break out befor etrying to break it :)

Easy, go to Campyonly or one of the other Campy oriented sites and download a copy of the 1996 catalog. Campy has exploded views in all their catalogs. Very informative.

Check to see if there is a set-screw in the collet. Somehow I remember reading that Campy put set-screws in some of their hubs.

On the new stuff there are set screws/pinch bolts that lock the setting on the cone. The older ones I'm looking at does not have these. However, there is an interesting hole (1 mm) on the face of the collets.

I have 3 wheelsets with these hubs. That cover is removed with a special tool that Campy made for the purpose. Basically a bearing puller with thin jaws of spring steel that would fit in the slot between the cover and the hub body, and the puller itself would contact the axle. The thing is held in with a series of circlip-like springs. 2 wide, thin screwdrivers might pop them off if you cannot find an equivalent tool at LBS or elsewhere.

after cruising every LBS, "Pinkey" from Revolution bikes actually had the exact campy tool! (see Bicycling Jan 06 P34) "Pinkey" has always been great to everyone, and I feel so stupid that I did not go there first.
Upon inspection the dust caps have a small groove hidden about 3 mm into the hub. There is a split ring that engages the groove. The force it took to reset the cap was very light, however, I could not remove the cap w a flat blade screw driver without cringing that the blade will mar the cap. guess it wille be back to the LBS when times comes to set the cones after the wheel is built.
