Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - RIP Skidstrong

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Check out the blog from the skidstrong guys. Lancey-pants shut 'em down.

so is that another win for lance? hes unstoppable!
"We started using the name Skidstrong back in May 2004, the same time that the LAF came out with their wristbands. A local customer saw our yellow-rimmed wheels in the window, and said "Cool wheels! They remind of those new yellow bands! You should call them Skidstrong!" So we did."
And then...
"No one, once, has commented on the Skidstrong name sounding like Livestrong. So when we were served papers a few weeks ago, it was literally news to us."
Sure, they didn't.
It's called selective hearing and tunnel vision.

Does anyone else think that Skidstrong was a stupid name anyway? I think the new name is way classier.

How come they haven't come down on drunkcyclist.com for the livewrong compaign? That sounds even more similar, in my mind, and does nearly exactly the same thing as skidstrong, only their bracelets are black and their cash goes towards preserving Arizona trails.
Seems pretty lame either way.

Yes. I could never quite articulate why, but I definitely thought it was stupid. Maybe a bit too riotgrrl for my tastes, or maybe I just couldn't really identify with the implied ethos. I mean, skidding is cool, but it's not, like, the best part of riding or anything. "Trackstar NYC" remains a way cooler name.

I agree that the new name is better, and didn't really like "Skidstrong" but I think that they had to change it because of LAF is totally bull. Especially since LAF didn't reply about giving any $ to the BMEF. Both organizations are only trying to generate cash for worthy causes.

I didn't care for Skidstrong, but @#$# Lance now. I hope he looses another testical.
Makes me want to buy skidstrong now if not just to say @#$@# you Lance. Though, I agree with both causes at heart.
Oh the dichotomy...

I think my girlfriend knows that Fergus guy doing the incredibly awkward looking trackstand in one of the photos on that blog.
Also, I doubt Lance Armstrong had anything to do with the Skidstrong thing getting shut down. I'm sure he has a team of legal goons who think about this stuff so he doesn't have to. The request to donate money probably never crossed his desk either. I would imagine that the lawyers would dismiss that out of hand for the really bad precedent it would set. I could start a campaign called "Lidstrong" that raised money for people who can't afford hats, wait to get shut down by Livestrong Inc. and then demand money for the hatless based on the fact that they gave money to another charitable/n.f.p. organization that bit their copyright.

Does this mean we're going to see "RARE originial Skidstrong bicycle bike fixie messenger courier memorabilia" all over eBay and Craigslist?

skidstrong as a name kinda made sense since i first saw it applied to their wheels. it didn't make me think of livestrong (nor was i confused between the two).
also, i highly doubt lance is behind the legal measures. in fact, i highly doubt he has anything to do with the functioning of the LAF, aside being a figurehead.

Be careful, keep raising his ire and he just might loose a testical upon all of us.

the way the law works, if you own a brand you're required to defend it if you want to keep it.
i'm not saying it's right, just how it is.

I am skeptical of the whole thing altogether... Skidstrong isn't that derivative of Livestrong andway. It isn't like the skidstrong thing ever grew that large anyway. Look how long it took the WWF to go after the WWF.

I doubt lance has anything to do with it, and frankly I like Livestrong as a whole and what they do. Popular or not, trendy wristbands or not, they do good things.

uhm, it's testicle.
lance is a jagoff, that is true. also, it is probably true that he had nothing to do with this. he is a jagoff for other reasons.
that said, it was surprising how many people jumped on his team to defend him.
finally, jagoff or not, i'm not sure mocking his cancer is fair. leaving your wife for sheryl crow, now that might be something to mock.
