I just wanted to say thanks to all of the people in the industry that have been visiting this board as of late. It's really great to have you here. Honestly, it's to the point that I don't think I could list all of the people who post here and also make the frames and components that we all drool over. Your contributions here bring a level of insight into how and why things work as they do, are made as they are, the thoughts put into making them, that we could never know otherwise.
I'd also like to thank all of you that sponsored the Chicago Meat-n-Greet. It does, I think make a big impression on all of the posters here to know that you'd donate stuff to something like that. A lot of us aren't messengers, we're not the most hardcore, do or die cyclists out there, but you still offered us prizes. I for one, am going to be looking for at least a Phil cog come spring. Why? Because I saw one in the first place winners Under the Weather bag when he was looking at what was in there. Because I read posts about the cog's finish and why it was made that way. That and my current DA cog will be toast after a Minnesota winter. Still, it influnces where I decide that my money should go.
And there's another way that the people here aren't like the messengers that have traditionally gotten the sponsorships. A lot of us actually have good, paying jobs. We're here because the biking is our passion. The money that other people put into their cars or their TVs or whatever, we put into our bikes. The more that we know and understand about where we are sending our money, the better. Sure, I could buy a Nashbar wheelset. But after reading posts by Tony Arms or (sorry forgot his name) the Guy From Velocity, I'm not going to do that. I think others probably feel the same way.
I've seen bad industry people on here as well (yeah, I'm thinking House of Track, or whatever that ebay shop was that was schizophrenic) and seen how people reading the posts of a retailer can have a bad effect. As far as I know, they are out of business. Yet from reading the experiences of several of my bikeForums comrades, I know why. I know that I would never have done business with them even if they were still around.
I think that most everyone I've seen posting on here lately is a completly different class of person, and business. And it's really great to have you guys here. I'm not sure how much the 'lug shot of the day' by Don Walker has influenced that, but I have the feeling it does at least a little. So thank you, personally, Don, for coming back to this site.
Anyways, I'm really rambling here, so I'll just leave it at this:
It's great to see you here. The world and business models are changing. What allows a huge corporation to mass produce frames in Taiwan also allows me to meet a custom framebuilder (Jonny- when I do have some money, I am going to need a fork. Jason, I'm going to need a pretty exact shade of Celeste... It has to match the rear triangle AND the tires that Marcus brought me) a few hours away.
And please remember, not every thread around here is about Pie or Hipsters. And if you know others that might want to post here, please let them know about it. It does make an impact, and as an added bonus, it's a great time killer at work (I think most of us know that all too well.)
Thanks for reading,
