During the spring, summer and fall, I would go out a few times a week during lunch and ride 10 miles or so. I decided to use our exercise room at work for the first time yesterday and got on the exercise bike thinking it would be a piece of cake for me. I couldn't believe how fast I got tired, and then it dawned on me... When I'm doing regular bike riding, I can coast. I guess I normally coast quite a bit.

Yeah, that's a problem for people who live in hilly, windless areas.

For me, the exercise bike or trainer is too easy. I hardly feel like I'm working even though I ride at the same cadence as when I'm outside, and even when I have the tension level fairly high.

But then for me, I spent 13 years riding in Manitoba where you don't coast because it is completely and utterly flat, and 95% of the time you're riding into some kind of wind.

When I moved here to Alberta earlier this year, one of the most exciting discoveries I made was that I could spend about half my ride coasting!! :D
