View Full Version : Hoods at the track

Is there any consensus on running hoods at the track (from a rule/safety standpoint). I've started riding at the local track (on a loaner bike), and I'd like to start using mine, but the only bars I have are taped with hoods for a front brake. Is there a general rule against just pulling the brake off and leaving hoods/bar intack (ie: is it necessary to travel with a second bar and do a switch out when I get there).

Just wondering if there's a general vibe against it (or a specific rule), or if it tends to be case by case depending on the track.

Cheers

ha...classic.

All I can think is that you might get the lever tied up in someone else's gear, etc, but I don't know how likely it is....

^^

and you can't do sanctioned races with 'em

Really? Where's it say that? It says you can't use bullhorns except for TTs and that you can't use brakes on the track. I see nowhere that says you can't use brake hoods themselves.

Those are regulations for a motor-pacing moped.

from the Kissena track rules......

9) Nothing is allowed on the bike. Just frame - bars - seat - and wheels.

Yeah, but the Kissena rules also states..

11) ... Bad sportmanship will not be tolerated at any level. Fines will be awarded to offenders. Repeat offenders will be terminated.

When was the last time someone was terminated at kissena??? :D

I've actually seen a few people get fined and/or kicked off the track at Kissena.

Are you talkin about London or do you know of one closer. A little off topic I know but your the first person Ive seen posting thats somewhat in my area. Im in Stratford and the only one who rides fixed. The reason l ask is the weather is bad in the winter and I hate those 1hr whiteouts back end forth.

While I'm pretty sure my local track wouldn't let you use them, these are pretty cool:

No hoods at the track ... the spectators would have a hard time figuring out who is who.

oops, my bad.

here's what usac says "(d) The handlebar ends shall be solidly plugged and attachments thereto shall be fashioned in such a way as to minimize danger without impairing steering. Handlebars used for steering with ends, features, or attachments that extend forward or upward or that provide support for other than the the rider's hands are permitted only in time trial and pursuit events (not in Team Sprint);"

Which seems to suggest that they're track legal, but just for TTs.

Of course that doesn't really answer the original question which really comes back to whatever the house rules are. I suspect many tracks will not allow them as track managers tend to have a more conservative interpretation of "track bike" than UCI. (See also the discussion about road conversions at the track.)

I have used hoods(brake leavers) on the track but for training only. You cannot race with them on your bike.

Doing messenger work with them..priceless.

Think of the extra drag they create! That's why I don't run them on any of my bikes, even on the street!

Think of the extra support climbing, sprinting and carrying trash on them..again priceless.

good for practicing pursuits when your bike is not there to train on..

I carry trash in one of these. Once you switch, you'll never go back.

Kissena and Penrose are both tracks in the hood...
But "hoods at the track"? I thought this might be a thread about racists and velodromes...

I remember the first time I came to your shop. Some kid was chasing me down Division with bottle rockets. Then the next time, I walked down that street that runs behind you and some cop escorted me to your shop. But we will go through anywhere to get to the best shop in the world. Thanks for everything Marcus.

a general vibe against it?...maybe

there's def no rule against me being at the track tho, but...heads prob would get a little shook and start holdin' tight to their rides like white women holdin' purses on elevators

ain't been to a velo yet, but...I might just have to fuk wit one...watch ya back

roscoenyc57

all kidding aside (I know thats hard to do here) when you are on the track you are riding very tight with other riders. People do go down and sometimes its not pretty. Thats why track rules state that you have to have drops and bar ends and no extra stuff on your bike. There's plenty of guys who ride to the track w a brake on and take them off when they get there or swap their bars when they get there. I'm sure if you went down in a pile up you wouldn't want somebody's brake lever stuck in your thigh.

My understanding is that USCF sanctioned racing rules require that the rider remain on the drops at all times. At least that was a rule enforced at our local speedway racing this past summer by the USCF officials. No flat bars, barends plugged, no waterbottles, no seat bags, track drop outs, no quick release hubs. Despite all this the racing was fun as fuk.

As mentioned before, it totally depends where you are.

They have a track....I guess it just got resurfaced...but that is just foolish...

Penrose or is it Primrose Velodrome is right under the hiway. I was going to go to it this year with Marcus from Yojimbo's Garage...But schedules...

Ok, after further review....(I still stand by the statement that it depends where you are and who is in charge..)
Here is a little clarification to this event and the picture.

"well, the deal was.....

since the track was only in use for about a month before the state chamionships, after sitting idle for many years and thus, not many in stl have track bikes, "someone," who's name i won't mention, chose to allow geared bikes in individual events "
