Well, it looks like winter is coming. Some of you may have noticed that it is getting colder. ;)
Let's see who the most extreme is this year. List your coldest ride so far this year.
Please post in Fahrenheit. (http://www.intmed.mcw.edu/clincalc/wtmeas.html)
Contest is for temperature only. Windchill, and other conditions are not being considered. Simply post what the mercury read while your were riding today.
It hasn't been very cold here yet. My coldest ride so far is:

61 degrees, and let me tell you how cold I was riding!!
14f. This is NOT a contest I want to win. Sadly it's possible.
Right around 10°F. The 25th was suppose to be a day off but I went to work to take advantage of the peace and quiet..

I think it was officially 17*f for my coldest ride. I guarentee when it gets to -20*... I'll be out for at least a spin around the block..
67 degrees. It has been colder here but on those days I was using the trainer.
Anyone else here doing the TCBC Polar Bear ride on New Year's day?
10 degrees F Just starting to get cold!
Gonna get worse before it gets better!
-7 F on Friday Nov 25, 2005. I was out riding around in the morning. This was the windchill temp. Winds were blowing around 25 mph or more.
It was a neat ride, and one wherein I got to test out my winter riding gear for the first time. Almost everything worked as expected, except for the gloves.

While I agree with you on the windchill, etc, I think the 5 mile limit is a bit high. I've got either a 3.75m or 4.9m commute depending on if I go through downtown or take the bike path. Both are about the same time, but downtown is shorter and more likely to be navigable (they do plow the path, but no salt or sand.) When it's over 30, I'll probably be more likely to go out for recreational rides, but my commute is going to be the cold ones...
So far I think it's been 8 or 9 degrees, not really sure. I guess if I was being conservative, I'd say 11 or 12. But the cold weather hasn't really hit yet... We just have had a fair amount of snow and cold so far...
I think the 5 mile limit is a bit high.
Anything less than 5 miles is hardly worth all the trouble of putting on the gear and getting out on the bicycle!! If you figure your commutes will be the cold rides, just take an extra loop around the block at one end or the other.
So far this winter (since the beginning of October, 2005), my coldest ride was -9C (15.8F). It was my November century, done on Sunday, November 6th. It did warm up to -2C (28.4F) sometime in the afternoon, but I'm absolutely certain I did more than 5 miles while it was still that cold.
Accurate, confirmable, temperature information:
http://www.climate.weatheroffice.ec.gc.ca/climateData/hourlydata_e.html?timeframe=1&Prov=AB&StationID=2134&Year=2005&Month=11&Day=6
Now if I were to include my rides from EARLIER this year, like January or February 2005, there would be some colder days ... are you just counting this WINTER or this YEAR?
Anyone else here doing the TCBC Polar Bear ride on New Year's day?
Sadly I won't be around.
Wait, sadly? Did I say that?
Coldest so far this year, 18F and winds at 10-15mph.
15 degrees. The 30 mph tailwind made the 15 miles fly by though!
Nothing big. 15F last Tuesday and Thursday.
Supposedly, we may hit 9F and 4F next Wed and Thursday. If the forecast holds I may need to bump up my next clothing purchase.

You're right. Thanks for giving me a reason to blow off going into work on my day off! I was going to head in and see if I could get Xerox to come in and fix the machine I broke yesterday, but I think I'll sit around the house and drink whiskey instead

hopefully I can make it this year. It sounds like a fun ride from what i've been told by the president.
Off to ride in the heatwave of 15degree's right now though :D

Me too, gonna try to make it out to Long Lake in the snow flurries. Snowmobiles should still be dormant right? It would really suck to get run over.

Exactly. I thought it was a bit low but wanted to be inclusive. I've never gone on a ride as short as 5 miles in cold weather but if i did i don't think i would even bother with all of the gear. I would probably just put on a warm coat.
The need for a minimum mileage is because riding around the block once in 0 F weather is different than riding 30 miles.
about -26 this morning, I was going to try to get 10 miles but I changed my mind when my hands got really cold.

-26 F?
Where are you?
Maybe Fairbanks AK according to the signature link.

Yeah, i see that now. Holy Crap!
BTW fruitless,
You only need five. ;)
Thanksgiving night was 13 F with 30 mph winds. But I only rode about 4 miles before the turkey started backing up on me. I went about 14 miles on a midnight fun ride Tuesday/Wednesday, 34 F.
Few will ever beat fruitless! Very impressive.
i think come jan/feb i may win this contest. This place can often be the coldest place on earth some days.

Nah, lots of people around here are way more hardcore than I am. I can't really get motivated to spend the money on hand-gear that will work for -25 down, its just not that fun. My commute to work is really short and after about -15 it takes longer to put on the clothes than it does to get there so thats pretty much my limit.
Plus, its not even officially winter until the 21st!
Got about 5F tonight... Wish the fire we started had of actually been warm, or some of us would have been motivated to find more/better firewood...
-19 c. Farenheit is for wimps.
12F, -11 C with blowing snow :) (on a Saturday for fun, not during the commute :))
-19 c. Farenheit is for wimps.
AKA -2.2 F
So far this seasons coldest commute has been -28 degree Celsius = -18.4 degree Fahrenheit.
Coldest ever for myself was -38 degree Celsius = -36.4 degree Fahrenheit.
My commutes are short, which is why it's possible to ride in this weather, current commute is 4km, the -38 day was a 6km ride. While some my say this isn't a long enough distance to get geared up and ride, I'd have to wear the same amount of gear to walk, and it would take 4 times as long, so why not ride!
Aberdeen SD was minus 24 deg F with minus 40 deg windchill at 7:45 CT today.
See here (http://www.weather.com/weather/local/USSD0001?from=search_current)
It was 2F on my commute this morning, 8.5 miles one way. My coldest commute ever was -24F.
I know I'll never win with the crazy people on this forum. My coldest was 11 degrees where I cut off a 30 mile ride after 11 miles because I couldn't take it anymore. My longest/coldest was 30 miles at 18 degrees. Again I aint gonna win no contests on this here forum. I did 10 miles this morning at 31 degrees and the lowest I'll go in my old age is probably around 25.

OK. So did you ride?
12 F today. Supposed to be single digits for rest of week. It ain't supposed to be this cold this early in Kansas. This is not good!
So is fruitless the winner thus far at -26F. I am shooting for -40C then I don't have to convert to Farenheit (-40F.) See you in Jan/Feb.

Providing he got at least 5 miles in, i have to say fruitless is the winner at this point. Somebody correct me if i am wrong.
12F, -11 C with blowing snow :) (on a Saturday for fun, not during the commute :))
And today makes it 0 F, -18 C.
My coldest this year: 17F, and I didn't even ride five miles in it.
Coldest last year: -10F.
Coldest ever: -15F.
All pretty tame compared to the Canadians, Minnesotans, and Dakotans...
This contest was over the minute the dudes from Sask. saw the title.

The competition isn't over. (although the field may have been narrowed a wee bit. ;) )
Ya know the whole distance requirement might prove a bit nebulous for me. My Cateye froze 3 miles into my commute today. All I know is that at 8f I was moving very slowly.

My computer froze out back when it dropped to 15F, so I just took if off for the winter.
19F...coldest ride of the season so far.
-10F this year. Oh wait, this season? 17F. :)
Certain Saskatchewan die-hards make me look like a wimp.
Strangely, the hottest I've ever been on a bicycle was that -10F ride. I figured I had better dress properly. Well, I overdid it. I had to stop and unzip and let the wind cool my torso. I also saw a bald eagle that morning.
This contest was over the minute the dudes from Sask. saw the title.
They are definately the Dream Team of winter commuting.
Neither of my Cateyes have quit "yet." They do move awfully slowly sort of like me. It takes what seems like forever for a digit to change when riding.
