It never fails to amaze me. I will be on a ride and have a mechanical and not have the right tool for the job.

I always carry a chain tool. Road or mountain, its one of the most basic tools to carry, but not today it seems. I was rounding a corner in town on the way home from a long ride when I hear a loud PING! Uh-oh, not a good sound to hear. I pulled over to the curb and saw that I had popped a side plate off of one of my chain links. No worries, reach into the trusty seat bag and pull out my chain tool.....NOT!

It seems I had somehow forgot to put it in there last time I was meesing with the bag. Hmmmmm....what to do. The chain is too short to make the bike a single speed with my handy superlink. No one home to call, the family went to the park for the day....pppbbbbtt. Wait! What's that? I have duct tape!

With nothing to lose and a 5 mile walk ahead of me....ugh, I went ahead and fashioned a duct tape patch utilizing the remaining piece of the broken link. I thought, no way will it hold, but what the heck......It held.

Yup 5 miles later I pull into the driveway and breath a huge sigh of relief and wonder. The stupid fix held! Unreal, my best fix ever. Which made me wonder....what is the best fix any of you have ever had using only duct tape? I am interested to hear.

On my MTB, my front brake cable snapped and i didnt have a spare one. I duct taped it together down the center.

carry a big paperclip. It actualy works for quick-chain fixes.
