Touring - Has anyone ever done a Coast to Coast in different sections?

Because of my work (U.S. Coast Guard), I am unable to take the 60+ days off needed to ride tandem with my wife, across the U.S. of A.

We are considering breaking it up into 3 or 4 different sections (example VA to MO one year, MO to CO the next, etc.), and doing the trip over two or three summers.

Anyone out there done this? Other than the obvious (more money for travel), what logistical concerns might there be?

We are going to be starting small this year (local tours around the Great Lakes), but it's in my mind to stretch things out a bit more...always wanted to ride across the U.S.

Andy, quite a few people break up thier cross-country tours into yearly sections. crazy-guy-on-a-bike website has a number of travelogues about riders doing cross country tours in yearly sections. I am riding the Northern tier beginning in 2007 in 4 parts.
I know one couple who was intending to ride the Transam route in 4 sections on a tandem..He did the planning ( 85 miles per day average for 14 days straight!)and didn't take into account how far his wife might want to ride per day or that she might want to stop and see the sights. They made the ~1200 miles from Florence Oregon to West Yellowstone WY in 14 days but she was hurting, tired and pissed. They(actually she)didn't go back the second year

That's been my dream for several years. Got a buddy who's retiring next year and he's going cross county on bicycle. I'm going to see how it works for him and then I"ll plani mine in a few years. Breaking it up seems like the smart way to go. You get a chance to tour, rest up and avoid bad weather. If you're doing it over 2 or 3 summers, you ought to see if you can plan your route so you stay in quarters at AF or NG bases along the way...you can get cheap rates on transitory housing at most big bases. BTW, I'm CG Reserve...drilling in Paducah this weekend. Semper P.!
