I'm not familiar with how to use forums and I'm writing this for the second time. I'm hoping I'll be able to figure it all out soon? Anyway, I had originally ask if anyone could help me out with information about BMX bikes and gear for my 7 year old son. He is interested in Racing and playing around at our local skate park. I was wondering if I can buy one bike to for both purposes. Are there any good online places to buy gear for racing?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Dan

Dan,

Short answer. No you can't buy a bike for both purposes. sorry. To be competitive in racing a bike must be sized properly and as light as possible. Your 7 year old should probably be on a Mini or Junior sized race bike which would weigh less than 18 lbs and have thin tires (1 1/8 or 1 3/8 diameter).
For skatepark riding your son would ideally use something like a Free Agent Lil-Homie, a 16" wheeled freestyle bike. These things are miniature versions of freestyle bikes that can take serious abuse without damage. The 16" wheel size will make the bike good until your son is about 11 or 12 - it will look small at that point, but will be relatively similar to the size of a 20" wheeled freestyle bike under a professional bmx adult.

If you don't have a good source for these bikes in Edmonton, come to Calgary some day or check out my website ate http://www.bikebros.ca . I am happy to ship bikes to you.

cheers,
