The rubber on a fork. RS Judy XC 2001. Can I remove the boot cover on this fork somehow. Maybe I can modify it. Any ideas. Thanks.

If you take the fork apart they can be removed. My Judy XC is apart right now. Look on Rockshox site for the manual if you don't have one. Pretty simple to take apart.

or you can take a knife and cut the boots off.

Yeah. So if I cut these things off do I need to do anything to the fork so that it won't leak or anything.

What you guys are saying is that I can cut the rubber off and away I go. Is that right? Nothing else needs to be done. Why do some forks have them and some don't. I don't like the way it looks.

The reason the boots are on the fork is to keep dirt from getting into the seals. They are not needed by professional racers because they have team mechanics that can fix any problem. My SIDs came without boots and since I have never had to take it apart it still does not have them. I will probably eventually put them on, but not until the fork need maintenance.

they are dust covers to keep dirt from getting into the shocks. But dust gets in there anyway and the rubber boot sucks dirt in.
If you cut them off, you have to clean the fork more often but I've had the boots cut off my fork all season without disassembly.
You can also buy those neoprene fork wraps to keep dirt out-they don't look as bad as the rubber boots and you can have them just cover the seal, not the whole stantion

Thanks for advice.

I spoke to my LBS and it seems that together with some of your views it would be alright to cut them off. I have to clean them more often but that's no big deal...there, I cut them off. It looks better.
