Touring - Enter in New-York Cyty by bike

Hi,

I want to know how could I enter in New-York City by bike.

What road should I take? Sould I take a ferry? a bus?

I will come from SOUTH (Atlantic city).

hoboken station take the path train.

If you can somehow make your way to the gwb, you can get across from there. Otherwise, hitch a ride?

I don't want to visit the city with my bike.

I want to start my trip in Florida and finish it in New-York city. I will park my bike at the hostel and I will stay for 3 or 4 days to visit Manhattan by bus, by subway and by yellow cab.

After that... 10 hours by bus to go home in Iberville Québec !



Is George Washington the only bridge that I can cross by bike?

Depending on your tolerance for traffic , coming from the south you can hop on a NJ Transit Train (http://www.njtransit.com/sf_tr_schedules.shtml#) at any point from Bayhead north. I would probaly ride as far as Longbranch up the coast and then get on the train to Hoboken at Hoboken you can get on a Ferry or transfer to a PATH train.
Transportation Alternatives (http://www.transalt.org/) has a lot of information on cycling in and around NYC. They also have a page on secure parking garages for bicycles in the city. Don't use the public racks!

This site has some info on getting along the Jersey side of the Hudson to the GW bridge, or getting to the Staten Island Ferry. There are also ferries from Hoboken and Jersey City.

It's not bad, really.

GWB is the best way to ride in, really the only way unless you come through brooklyn.
Otherwise, you can take the PATH from hoboken, or the ferry from staten island.

On the off chance you would consider riding the more ruarl and scenic routes thorough NJ to the New york stateline, I believe that there is a bike path that runs from Nanuet to the GWB (folks correct me if I am wrong).

I just got an NYC cycling map from the NY DOT for free. That should help you if you get one.

This is the best advice.

The OP is coming from Atlantic City which presents a problem because Bayhead or Longbranch to Atlantic city is not safe at all! In fact, you have to get to the middle of New Jersey and take back roads because route 9 is not safe after Bayhead.

Someone gave me a route to arrive from Cape May to Long Branch but I never tried it out so I can't validate.

If he's riding in the middle of New Jersey (taking backroads), he can ride to New Brunswick and take NJ Transit there instead of going to Long Branch.

I realy think that I will take the njtransit train. Maybe from BayHead or, if I visit Philadelphia first, from Trenton.
