I have a recumbent with a 110/74 BCD crankset. The chainrings are 46/36/24. I tour and tow a Nomad trailer with it and wonder if there is any way to lower the 24 to a 22 on this crankset. If not I will purchase a mountain crankset but I like the current crankset that is on the bent. Thank you in advance. Rich

I think you should be able to get a 22 for the 74 bcd (although i'm not absolutely sure without checking supplier catalogs). What about getting a cassette with a lower gear - what cassette gearing do you have?

According to Sheldon/Harris Cyclery's chainring page, 24 is as low as you can go. http://sheldonbrown.com/harris/chainrings.html

Don't know if there are any exceptions to this, but it looks like you'll have to get a mountain crankset in order to go lower.

EDIT: Don't forget to check thoroughly, first! I don't know if 24 is listed as smallest because of a physical size limitation, or just a matter of supply and demand.

24T is a small as you can fit on a 74 mm bolt circle crank. If you want a 20T or 22T you have to go to a MTB crank.

BTW, what is your cassette range? Can you go lower there which would be a lot cheaper then a new crank?

I have an 11-34 cassette so I can't go any lower there. I guess the Mountain crank is the way I will go. Thanks
