Does anyone know if the steering damper on the 2005 yamaha R1 can be used (interchanged) on say, a R6, gsxr, or cbr?

I don't know. But I bet someone does.

(*I'd probably just do it, if I, say, had the R1 steering damper sitting around, and needed to put it on my R6, gixxer, cbr, etc. But then I'm too cheap to buy new.)

I also think one of you here knows.
They're all so similar I can probably machine an adapter plate or something, then I'll start getting the shimmy at 170mph..

The mounting should be the only difference. A steering dampner works alike no matter what it's on

The mounting-bracket changed in '02, so even R1 dampers between different generations won't fit on all R1s. Definitely not a direct bolt-on mod for the R6 or CBR; you'll need to make your own brackets. If you're gonna be going to be doing that, you might as well get a better aftermarket unit than the stock R1 damper, like an Ohlins. Although the progressive/adjustable unit from Scotts is pretty darn nice too...

The fork-tubes went from 41mm to 43mm in '02. So if the bike you're fitting it has the same diameter, that takes care of one fitting if it's the same.

If the R1 and R6 are the same model and they use the same frames /same diameter fork stancions then they will be interchangeable. I'm pretty sure the late models R1 and R6 do use the same frame. They are not interchangeable amongst different manufacturers though.

FWIW... I used a VW Microbus steering dampener on a BMW sidecar rig to control front end osscilations. :)

Well it'll definitely be possible to machine an adaptor plate. I'm just wondering if it's a deathwish or not..

No, not a deathwish. All a steering dampner is, is a piston in a cylinder filled with hydraulic fluid with equal dampening rates on compression and rebound, most dampeners have an adjustable dampening feature on them as well.

If you look in a Lockheart or any other Hi-perf aftermarket catalog at their dampeners 90% of the time the only difference is the mounting kit... the cylinders are all the same

I'll build my own variable density magnetic spring damper...

...with unipolar unilaterial subtrufication of the particle differental bombardment transducer?

You should add Stacey to your will to thank her for all the help :p. I think she wants your gf? Let her know when you get the bike so she can start planning for the inheritance. If you were shorter I'd call the litespeed.

I went the cheap route and used one from a screen door pneumatic closer
cause they looked similar. But every time I rode it seemed to want to turn
left so I took it off and flipped it and it turned to the right. So I bought
another one and have one on each side which balanced it out too much
and no its difficult to turn either way...

a crayon and a sharpie look similar, yet you'd only give one to a little kid. It's the function that determines the usefulness for the particular application.

I'm gonna get a 250. It looks like a sport bike but acts like a scooter :).

Dude, there's a little screw in the end of the piston. Sounds like you need to turn down the damping a little bit & you'll be all set. :D

.... yeah, but overcoming the spring resistance is a pain!

Sure! I've seen my friend Kevin E.'s crew do it all the time on their Formula Extreme Honda

Just remember to remove the locking washer/tab thing on the screen-door plunger. Wouldn't want your bike stuck in the open-door position turning left all the time... NASBIKE anyone??

I removed thoose when I removed the chains with the springs
that keep the door from opening too far...I wanted to leave
them on but the scratched the heck outta my paint!

That's ok, just it's not like they're making you guess how it's spelled.

Drag Racing... yeah, I've seen that on Benny Hill & Monty Python. Those crazy Brits, gotta love em!

You're Kidding right?

Talk about going 170 mph and you worry about other things?

Better put more soy sauce in that thing ... hee hee had to say it!

Stacey

Ha... Look who's talking!!

The only way you'd get a Hardley to go 170 is to drop it off a freakin cliff :p

PatrickMcCabe
12-07-05, 02:10 PM
Sorry Stacey it would only make it to 124mph terminal velocity,
no if you attached a rocket motor then threw it off a cliff, BINGO!
