Foo - Will somebody explain pwned?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

THAT is pwned!
be that the case, why is there a p?
The urban legend is that in an early Japanese shooter game there was a typo where "owned' was spelled "pwned", or in online gaming people type messages so fast and recklessly that they often type "I pwned that noob" by mistake. (EDIT) Other words are often mispelled online too, including "rain" :)

p is hacker speak for the letter 'o'.

i'm pretty sure it originated as a deliberate typo by a doom/quake game designer and player who wanted to see if everyone followed the trend? can someone substantiate?

The actual truth was it was in the game Warcraft. I forgot which one, but somewhere in it was a misspelling of the word "Owned", in the context of ownership. Even back then though, "Owned" also meant beating someone in a way that's humiliating/embarassing.
Like when I got bored on a battlefield2 game with some old friends, and threatened one of them that I would kill him at least 60 times in the next hour, without firing a single bullet...and proceeded to do so, as far as actually blowing things off of cliffs into him using c4 charges and such....that would be considered "Owned".
...actually, I think the proper term for what happened to him was "violated".

According to the urban dictionary, its origin is in debate whether it was Warcraft or Quake.

Why I know this, I don't know.

When exactly was "the day"? Was it a specific era or a nondescript blip in time?

There are 2 main accepted theorys of pwned which can be found on Urbandicitionary.com and wikipedia.com
The quake theory is just that the word owned was just mispronounced by a high ranking player.
The second theory takes place on either warcraft or starcraft. no one knows which but being a starcraft fan i would hope it would be SC that takes the fame. It goes on to say that a map was built that accedently exclaimed "you were pwned" when you lost, instead of "you were Owned"

Reason I buy the warcraft one is that the word showed up well before starcraft, and was right about time when warcraft II came out. I've seen that word for years. pwned was the original, now you see pwnt. I find pwnt to just be imbecile keyboard scrawlings from a deficient mind...as I do most variants of owned aside from pwned. 0wn3d....only for parody sake, otherwise I shall get my C4 charges ready and proceed to play mousetrap with the fool that starts this next time I'm on BF2.

OWNED

Pwned relates to the really old manual typewriters. On the QWERTY keyboards "p" and "o" are next to each other on the top row or letters. A common typo would be to press the "p" instead of an "o". This could happen at anytime on any keyboard. But happend more often on the older manual keyboards which required alot of finger pressure. So, this is the sort of a word play type thing devised by geeks/nerds.

There was a perfect picture I saw a couple years ago that would be perfect for this. It was in a rugby match and some guy had reached over his opponents head from behind and had hooked and embedded two fingers fully into his eye-sockets up to the 1st knuckle and was pulling his head back. Anyone have this picture?

I don't, and I hope no one else does.
What about the b-ball player who's crotch is resting on the defender's face as he does a tomahawk dunk?
