Cyclocross - Trail Riding tire choice.

I have a Miyata Quickcross I picked up in a garage sale. It has a triple chain ring so I think I can ride trails in this area (southern Idaho) and in Las Vegas on a winter trip. The present tires are Kenda 700x38 but have a smooth center so I doubt they would be a good choice for trail riding. I am looking for a low buck tire that will stick in trail riding. Please make suggestions , my only limit is the front fork that measures 45mm where the tire intersects.

I use Continental Twister Pro, both 37c and 32c for riding on desert southwest single track (rocky, some sand, some hardpacked with loose rubble climbs) and they work fine for me and have held up to lots of trail abuse.

They are pricy at list (perhaps $35-40), but got 'em at Supergo sale for $15 each.

WTB Cross Wolf 700x32. I'm not sure if you can find them cheap enough to suit your budgetary constraints, but these tires are super grippy. I've used them to ride fire roads and gnarly single track and traction is amazing. For a cushier ride, bigger tires would be better but the 32c is a good compromise if you do much road riding at all.

I'd say fit the biggest tire you can squeeze in, and look for something with some knobs. I like my michelin mud tires for trails, but they weren't cheap. The 42c ritchey tires might be a good option too.
