I just wondered, is anyone in this forum famous, or should I say, infamous maybe? Could it be that there is a celebrity of some sorts hiding in this forum?

I was 'famous' for a while and was mentioned in one of the SA legal journals. I was arrested in the 70s when I reentered SA from the UK. The charge? Evading military service. The military police took me into custody and I was held at detention barracks. That was a hard ordeal.
I was brought before a joint military/civilian legal tribunal. I successfully argued that in terms of qualification for military service, there was a difference between a SA passport (they would not give me one on account of my fathers 'radical' views in the 1960s - he was an afrikaaner, by the way) and an identity document (which they did give me). The passport implies citizenship, and the identity document identifies you as either a citizen or as a resident. My ID document was not stamped with either status.
I concluded by telling them, that unless I am granted a passport to clarify the undetermined status of the identity document, then I am not entitled to take part in any electoral process, and being excluded, I cannot be expected to defend a constitution or political system that I have no right to participate within. A long tale, I admit.

Former resident 'Arogant Bastard and Poor Speller' of Bicycleforum.com. Does that count? I wrote a nifty short story for Bob at the time as well.. thats about the extent of my fame unless you count high school athletics (which I dont).

Nope. nor do I want to be. The money isn't worth the price you pay for famous.
And really fame only occurs in select circles. Very Very few people are infamous. Past Lance armstrong I couldn't name a single other roadie. Once you get past Lance, Michael and Tiger there are very few 'infamous' people.

Why would someone want fame?
I used to work at a Boy Scout Camp, and actually been asked for my autograph by kids that had camped there. I thought it was funny.
There was a short amount of time, where I was dating a journalist. Sometimes it seemed like all she was worried about was if anyone watched her spots. I helped her out once on space heater safety, While she was talking they had me cleaning a space heater. The next day I was at a burger joint, the guy in front of me looked at me funny(in a glum way). Then "Hey, you were on TV last night!" There was a smile on his face. I asked him if he was smiling because I did not come across as an idiot on TV.
I feel being respected for the things you do, or the way you are, is by far more important than fame. As John Conlee said in one of his songs " I am just a common man.."

Well...I'm not famous . I'm pretty big on the local race scene. I'm very well known as far as junior cycling goes in the U.S. I'm starting to get a little more recognition among the elite track riders in the U.S. Road around here is hard to get too famous...

I've been recognized a very few times around Memphis as, "Hey, aren't you a dancer? I saw you in something!" After a few minutes we figure it out. One of the members of the Miss Saigon Broadway tour asked me to sleep with him, and I said hell no. That's my 'almost famous' story :rolleyes: :p

I know this will probably disgust a few people here but...
I once went to a restaurant/beer hall in Munich where they served bratwurst by the meter. I ate a meter's worth. They took down my name and where I was from and posted it to the wall along with others. Does that make me famous? There sure were a lot of names on that wall though. |8^)

I ate a 48 oz steak for my 18th birthday. I usually like my steak med-rare so I asked for it this way. I didn't know the thing was 3 inches thick! So it turned out to be raw in the middle. I sent it back after eating about 1/4 of it, then polished the rest of it off after its return.

Don't agree with Maelstrom's comment, after top known cyclists few professional cyclists are famous.. Of course question is fame a good thing.
Cyclists who pay attention to professional cycling events know who are the great cyclists are. Just attend any local cycling expositions.. There will be lines of greaters to meet members of the more famous cycling teams- such as Saturn.
If you ever get to see one of the national European cycling events- following the days stage- there will be lots of groupee's about wanting the various cyclists autograph...
This somewhat more so in Europe than the U.S.

Built a home next to the vino route here 3yrs ago, fresh from Newport Beach, CA. Haven't found any riding buddies yet. However, I am getting a work out in the surrounding hills. I am pretty good on distance and speed on the flats. Heading to Newport Beach this wkend for a nice long "flat" ride with some speed. These hills around my house are kicking my a**. Last night a short 30min, 5.5 mi ride through the surrounding hills got me a BPM of 160-175, an overall average of 9.9 mph and kicked my a**.:D

A few months ago after a match , I with several hundred people ran on the pitch to celebrate an incredible win.
The following monday the local paper ran a big headline on the back page and under the headline was a picture of the team captain being congratulated (hugged) by yours truly.
I don't by the said paper but everybody else does, so I wasn't aware of it until the phone started ringing.
you can imagine the amount of stick I took that week.
I guess that was my moment of fame:D

some years ago @ work i drove a locomotive with faulty brakes thro a set of workshop roller doors & shunted all the wagons(cars) inside out of the roller doors at the other end of the shed:( luckily it was in the early hours of the morning & no one was working on the cars ,some of which were up on jacks!! it certainly made me famous for a while& is brought up on odd occasions as a conversation piece :o

Man I hope I'm not famous, I like the quiet little world that I live in, It's always a peaceful place where the sun always shines. I let very few in, and when I do let someone in, I tend to not let them stay long. When I look out into the other, outside world, it's always raining and attitudes are on the tense side.
