Road Cycling - Questions about indoor training?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Hello Again:
Now let me direct my questions to indoor training. Being that I am a teacher and soccer coach on a very tight schedule I was curious if anyone could tell me the good a stairmaster and eliptical machine would do for training and would they have ill effects on cycling? I can use a stationary bike but it is an old stlye in poor shape. I have good access one hour a day to a stairmaster and eliptical runner. Thanks.

While the stairmaster/eliptical machine won't contribute much to the cycling specific muscle development they WILL help you develop the aerobic condition you'll need.
Neither machine will offer you the kind of workout that would cause you to "bulk up" with muscle so you shouldn't be too worried about the ill-effects toward your cycling.

I like the stairmaster because I can get my hart rate higher than I can with a stationary bike. I've only used the elipictal trainer a little only because I got started on the staimaster.

I live in New England, in the winter there are days when I don't ride outside due to weather. After trying many different trainers and pieces of excercise equipment I found the Cyclops fluid 2+ trainer to be the best and most like riding outside. It allows you to push resistance and get your heart rate up and keep it there. I have found that working out on it is very effective. I built up a bike that I leave snapped into it and geared it to give me high resistance, the trainer is quiet and smooth and is prooving to be quite durable.

The Spinervals videos by Troy Jacobsen are really good and make your indoor workout fly by.
The NEW Cycleops fluid trainers are great. I had both of the older versions and they leaked!
Since I am stuck living in New England, I recently bought a Computrainer 3D for winter workouts. I have to say that it is the most motivational and realistic training device I have ever tried. I'm actually looking forward to getting on it this winter!
They just came out with GPS waypoint logging/topo mapping conversion software so that you can accurately log your favorite rides on you GPS and recreate them on the trainer, hill for hill, mile for mile.
