My roommate borrowed and lost my winter riding gloves. Now I'm totally screwed.

I need some super-awesome winter gloves that will keep me warm and dry no matter how cold it gets. I need to be able to hold a pen and write in my manifest. I need them to cost less than $30, preferably. And I need to buy them in New York, soon.

What's the deal with neoprene gloves? Seems like they're cheap, warm, thin and waterproof. Any downside?

What about mittens that convert into fingerless gloves? Would a wool pair of mittens keep me toasty warm?

Any other recommendations?

Any good stores in New York to look into?

Lots of folks swear by the lobster gloves, but I just bought a pair of these windproof convertible mittens from campmore and I'm very happy with them. They're not terribly waterproof tho, and I did cut off the toes of some old socks and thicken the mitten part just a tad to hold more heat. They were wonderfully cheap and have done a great job of keeping my hands warm in the subzero (F) temps we've been enjoying thus far. HOWEVER, if I had lots of stop and go where I didn't get a chance to get my heart rate up and circulation pumping, I'm not sure these would be the right choice. Usually my hands are a little chilly for the first mile or so. AND, I tuck the tops of the mittens into my jacket or sweater, so any extra heat generated by my hands goes up my arm and doesn't get lost to the outside. This seems to do the trick. Personally, I think any mittens you find that are windproof and loose enough to trap warm air are going to work.

These are the ones I have:

Ya I would just look at nice ski gloves. I bought a pair of Louis Garneau Lobster gloves and am extremely dissatisfied. They really did not do much for me at all. I plan on investing into a pair of Specialized thermal gloves or seeing what I can come up with at Walmart or Target....you can usually find some very high quality gloves there.

You can make your own by tanning the skin of the dead roommate. Opps, did I write that? Disregard.

I've never been able to keep my fingers warm in gloves if its below about 20F. I use the lobster style mittens below 20. They have pretty good dexterity. I think I paid between $20 and $30 for mine a couple of years ago.

Stay away from the neoprene they are good for a couple of miles, But when you start to sweat they become a finger numbing trap. Neoprene has very little wicking properties. It will leave you with cold wet fingers. (Not to say that neoprene doesn’t make a good shoe cover it has its uses)

I would get some Lobster claws or a set of Buckskin mittens with some wool glove liners. If you are doing some writing along the way. Just pull your hand with the wool gloves on and your set to write.

LOWES (the home improvement store) has some great GREAT winter gloves near the snow shovels for $12. They are black with reflective dots. They are really hot--I mean they keep my hands so warm they are almost hot. They are better than my Pearl Izumi AmFib Lobsters that I bought for friggin' $45.

I've bought large leather, with lambs wool mitts from a store, here in MN, which supplies construction workers.

I use Performance neoprene gloves which make my hands sweat most of the time. I think $19.99 plus shipping.
