When my core is too warm, why not just remove head covering, i.e., the scarf or balclava? How does this work over 15-40 miles in like 20-40F temps?

Neck and head coverings are easy to adjust and carry and a sensible way to modulate your temperatre. I couldnt survive winter without my long "headover" neck-tube.

To me that's a bit like tearing the roof off the house when all I need to do is lower the thermostat. Usually I'll vent a little more at the neck or torso for this.

I have a Giro Ravine snow sports helmet that has ten vents that can be opened or closed while riding and it works great. Yesterday I had the vents closed for half the ride and I built up too much heat and fogged up my goggles so today I left the vents open the whole ride and that solved the problem.

If my core is too warm, I usually just unzip my jacket, and possibly also my jerseys, a bit till I'm cooled again.

If I'm not cooling off after half an hour or so, and especially if the day is warming up, then I'll consider removing my balaclava.

Lot of difference between 20 and 40. You ask "why not?" Take it off and see. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Depends on a variety of things. Your head/face will tell you if it was a good idea.

Probably depends on your tolerance and the temps outside. Have you tried your proposed technique yet? If so, did it work for you?

The skin on your face/neck are much "thinner" and more sensative and I consider them to be part of the extremeties (think of ears...how many major arteries and veins are in your ears? Not many.) As suggested by other folks, unzipping will help thermoregulate, and in my experience, helps to dry out the layers I have on, resulting in extended rideability. For me, keeping dry is vital. I'd rather ride in the snow than in the rain, for this very reason (as long as there's snow and not ice underneath. Nothing like zero friction for easy crashing. But, I digress).

*Asking in a perverted manner* What are you wearing underneath the jacket?

I'd get a jacket with pitzips. Vent right at the core on the fly.

Damn right. I love my softshell for winter, but dear god, it could use pit zips.
