Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - cell phone solution for ortlieb bag?

most bag companies are not very forthcoming about the exact mechanics of their cell phone holsters/pouches. Does anyone know of one that would fit a small flip phone, that does not attach merely by sliding onto the strap (ala timbuk2)? I have an ortlieb backpack, which has a 1" piece of webbing over the padding... sewn at both ends. Anyone know of a company that sells a holder that would be compatible? It need not be a messenger bag company.

I have the chrome cell phone holder. It works. It's you can adjust the size to acomidate different phone and the phone is clipped in so it isnt going anwhere. The first day in like a year I left my house without my cell phone in the clip and I lost it.

Just checked the web-site and it seems they have a new cell phone holder, but the new one looks pretty decent.

right-but how does it attach? chrome bags and most messenger bags have a way you can slide the holder over a two-inch strap... I need something that orients the phone parallel to the strap but can somehow clasp around the strap or clip securely onto the smaller one inch strap.

i've got a Blurr clipped onto the daisy chain on my Mountain Equipment Co-Op bag. Very solid, the only problem is I use it for my pager, not cell, and it is a tight fit.

the blurr looks good... but what is the attachment system like? I want it to be the opposite of this, basically, so the phone is upright on the strap..

The blurr is the exact opposite. It use two clips, mounted perpendicularly the the one shown. They lock too.

it seems kind of big though, I have a fairly small flip phone... would it just bounce around in that thing? are you talking about the "instrument case?"

Yes, it is the Instrument Case. I would guess it is about 2.5"X3.5", on the inside. The company website says it can fit a GPS unit, by I've yet to see one that small. It will certainly be wider and deeper than your phone, but it is slim, so I doubt it will slide a lot. I find it a little too deep for my pager, and a little too narrow, but it is all that I could find that has a good clip at the right angle. You may have better options because your phone is smaller overall.

I think the cell phone holster you need (and the one sxe fbm rider referred to earlier) is made by a company called Maxpedition. They manufacturer camping/tactical gear, and their cell phone belt clip is made to fit on a strap horizontally. It fastens on the back via two velcro strips that are very strong - i use one for for bag and have never had to worry about it falling out. You can adjust it for difference cell phone sizes from very small all the way up to a clunky radio. Personally, I use a Treo and it works just fine. I have the Medium size, by the way. I sewed a 2 inch piece of rubber backed elastic webbing in a band ( about 5 inches in diameter).

then used the cheapo vinyl elastic belt clip for my flip phone, which i never use.

put the belt clip part through the d ring on the strap which sits about chest level.

unthreaded the strap, put the elastic loop through the padded strap part, and over the belt clip.

rethreaded tha strap. kapow, chest level cell phone holder for ortlieb.

or instead of elastic fabric, you can use packing tape, which is what i was using before.

this holster is perfect for someone riding a fixie (anybody really into bikes, really). They're handmade in San Francisco, using real, used bike tires. Check it out. BTW, their closure is an X-pattern, so you can attach it horizontally or vertically.

manhattan portage holsters are the best, in my opinion. i use one on my kremlin, my friend has one on his ortlieb and almost every biker in my company uses one as well. - just avoid crumpler (vertical strap, bad for backpack) and timbuk2 (flimsy).

ooh, you want to clip it onto a horizontal doodad? in that case, a crumpler would work fine. coincidentally, the same ortlieb friend who has the portage holster on his shoulder strap also has a crumpler holster on his chest strap.
