********** when I lived in LA I saw almost every Germs gig they ever played (there were not that many) Has anybody seen them w this actor guy who played Darby in the movie? I stopped by their soundcheck at the Continental. Was good to see Lorna and Pat ...but I was unable to make the gig.

umm...the only germs/movie correlation i know is that they were in repo man.

i sent a few friends to the "concert" they filmed for the movie in LA. my friends said it was actually a really good gig and they had a blast.

okay, i remember hearing about that now. a friend of mine who lived in l.a. for a bit to record an album told me some story about seeing some really ******** looking dudes, who turned out to be in a movie. now that i think about it, i think it was a germs movie.

The actor who's playing Darby in the upcoming movie got a bunch of Darby's tattoos and everything.

The Germs had a song in the movie "Cruising" also. The track was produced by Jack Nitzsche.

Now terrifying the cat with Malefaction's Crush the Dream - there's so many punk rock fans here, I don't suppose anyone happens to have their way out of print first album Smothered on cd?

I've heard it's not the grind of their later stuff, but I've never heard it, and I love their extremely heavy and grindy sound while still sounding a bit like the grind hardcore of Benumb, plus some weird melodic bits out of nowhere.

^^^Fela is great, but only part of a whole afro-beat movement in the 70s and 80s. The best stuff is from Ghana, IMHO. Check out:
--Alex Konadu
--African Brothers
--Joe Mensah
--K. Frimpong & his Cubano Fiestas
--Hi-life international
--The Apagya Show Band

More recently, Ghanaian hiphop (or hiplife, as it is known) can be good (or very, very bad).

Check out Obrafo and Obisiba

Reggae from northern Cote d'Ivoire: Tiken Jah Fakoly.

West African music is the bomb.

MLPROJECT

genericbikedude

as I look through my computer playlists, lemme add:
--Honny & the Bees Band
--Gyedu Blay Ambolly & the Stenboofs
--The Sweet Talks
--The Ogyatanaa Show Band
--The Black Star Sound

For Fela, my favorite song of all time is "Fefe Na Efe" (which means in Asante Twi: "it is because of her beauty that a woman holds her breast when she runs, not because the breast will fall to the ground.")

well, c'mon - Fela really was pretty amazing.

you're right, however, about the astounding output of african music from the 70's and 80's. Rail Band stuff from Mali, Etoile de Dakar from Senegal... a ton of Hi-Life - all that sh*t is amazing. but don't forget about the Ethiopian material either... it's quite different, but equally mind-shattering.

YES!!! i have nearly the whole catalog up to about disc 15. absolutely fantastic stuff. the singing and the scales involved make the sound pretty unique, but the essential bottom (groove) is similar. trés funky.
