The soaring, Iron Maiden-style, guitarmonies on "My Better Half" kick an incredible amount of ass.

well, c'mon - Fela really was pretty amazing.

+1

Fela stood out because he was saying something, and saying something strong.. daring to be different, and challenge mainstream modern paradigms

if you really take time to listen to the lyrics of Fela's songs (sometimes they're hard to understand) and learn about the history of his experience/the Nigerian/the West African experience...

then one will realize why fela is the FUKIN ****...

yes...Afro Pop, and West AFrican music in general is TIGHT (Franco is mY SHIEETTT!)...

but Fela stood out in that he made tight music, his band (and my man TOny Allen) was always on point, and he said...WHATEVER THE FUK HE WANTED...and it was often some deep ****
just look at song titles....

Expensive ****
Coffin For Head of State
Shuffering and Shmiling
Gentleman
ITT (International Thief Thief)
Army Arrangement
Sorrow Tears & Blood
Zombie
Teacher Don't Teach Me Nonsense
Witchcraft
Monday Morning in Lagos
Ye Ye Ye De Smell

and if the message isn't clear in the title (which they aren't generally), then listen to the songs, and it will be clear....Fela was a revolutionary musical poet

Killed by his own misogeny and womanizing: AIDS.

no...he wasn't killed by his misogeny and womanizing...he was killed by AIDS, the horrible epidemic that it is

yes, he did once marry lots and lots of women (at once)...the story behind it (and his life) is actually very interesting...but I won't go into it...those interested can do a google research.

not that it justifies his polygamy (although MISOGYNY is much more present in western..ie..USA's patriarchal MONOGAMY)..., but he did later divorce all of his wives, criticizing the institution of marriage in general, and saying that no man should be able to own a woman's vagina

Fela was indeed more than just his music. he stood in direct contrast to the corrupt Nigerian regime of his time, and paid the price for it - he did some time in prison and was persecuted for his activities throughout his life. But his uncompromising stand against corruption and dictatorships, and his championing of human rights remains a brilliant example of powerful politics inextricably intertwined with powerful music.

edit: i saw tony allen and his band play about 4 years ago... he completely melted my face. just incredible.

i have to disagree...dragonforce is way more epic than those bands and uses the cheese factor to their advantage. i think they know they're cheesy and just run with it. plus they totally have the video game sound of megaman x (i think that's the one) down.

The Sonics are one of the best ******** rock and roll bands of all time. However I tend to agree with you. It's not the same band on the early recordings thought. If I'm right, one of the Parypa brothers was singing at first because Gerry Roslie, the sax player (who i think works with blood for blood now) and the drummer didn't join up until likeand it basically had none of the cojones that Gerry Roslie did. Which albums are you talking about? I didn't think they released any full lengths from before Roslie joined until norton put out a live album called Savage Young Sonics recently though.

Here Are and Boom are of course some of the best and rawest rock and roll of all time. Rock.

I shouldn't have started my tastes in 60s punk/garage with the Sonics - everything pales in comparison, save a song here or there.

Strychnine is a staple of the "get down" parts of my mix tapes, and is up there on my playlist of songs that make me mash harder and spin faster.

okay, okay...just to be clear on terms here, are you talking "leftist" or "commie"? hell, "commie" seems to be a fairly subjective term. to that pill-poppin' fickhead rush limbaugh, bill clinton was probably a "commie". he was really just a "democrat". and "commie" is short for "communist", not short for "someone whose political views are too far left of mine for me to give them the respect of any proper classification or attempts at understanding just for the hell of knowing a little more about ****".
