okay, i'm going to do a promo spot here for some of my friends in metal bands back in idaho, since ieatrats asked about metal. sorry it's all myspace pages.
first, this is mostly one guy....lo-fi goregrind/swedish death metal. a couple of songs have different drummers or friends on vocals, but it's mostly one guy.
http://www.myspace.com/pileofmaggotinfestedviscera
then, he's also a guitarist in another band.
http://www.myspace.com/starscreamy
the drummer from that band also played on pile of maggot infested viscera. he's also in these next two bands
http://www.myspace.com/hummingbirdofdeath this also has the main dude from pile, etc.
http://www.myspace.com/theartofcolonoscopy this is also the band i used to be in. the new guitarist who replaced me is in this band:
http://www.myspace.com/murderandthemediamachine
the first time i saw the band above, this band opened for them, and i knew their singer when he was 10 because our parents were friends...ah, time goes by.
http://www.myspace.com/hughdownsinc
a couple dudes from this band are in this band, too.
http://www.myspace.com/mysexyassassin
there are some more metal bands in idaho...
this one i don't remember who i knew in the band, but they're gone. sort of mayhem-y stuff.
http://www.myspace.com/feastingontheelderly
this band...i have no idea who's in the band. but...songs that last seconds, blazing drumming...so grindcore it hurts.
http://www.myspace.com/xsxex
also r.i.p., but a great name...jokey black metal. arch goat of sodomy.
http://www.myspace.com/archgoatofsodomy
there's a summary of metal in idaho. it's mostly a scene of bands that play in garages and no place else, because all the metalheads there are in bands, so there's no one to go to shows, or a fairly incestuous scene of grindcore that occasionally drags in some hardcore kids.

yeah, i heard some of that e.p. some good stuff. i wasn't as big a fan of endless numbered days at first, but it grew on me. even if the lo-fi sam beam is gone, he's still great.
iron and wine pretty much kicks ass.
Agreed, but hearing their cover of "Such Great Heights" in the new M&M's commercial made me sad inside. They did however kick ass when they came to my school last year.

Spoon - the last tune off the Soft Effects ep that my old roommate infected me with, despite the fact that we both hated Spoon at the time. Once in the headphones, and then once at home just because it needed to get played twice in a row.
that led to Girls Can Tell, always a good idea.

High On Fire - Blessed Black Wings
Left their show the other day after 3 songs, totally bummed that they were pretty boring live, and I'm elated that this record still sounds huge and heavy. I thought I'd never be able to listen to them again.

fwiw, I love Buried Inside and don't care for "sleaze rock", Motorhead/Melvins inspired stuff, so I didn't get into any of the bands that played, though I'd had high hopes for BB because I dig Karp. Their drummer however was fantastic, and I'll check out the Murder City Devils just for that. And HOF I think I'm just forced to like because I liked Sleep when they came out, but then and now I don't really listen to any metal like that.
The rest of the people at the show seemed to be pretty enthusiastic.

buried inside is great. i totally forgot that they're playing that denver show too. karp and murder city devils are sweet. that drummer was also in sugartooth as well. and on the danzig 4 album... yuck.
you should still check out saviours... now only 2 (scott and austin), but was three guys from yaphet kotto and two guys from drunk horse. mag is no longer in saviours, but the guitar player from the f***ing champs is probably going to play with them.

YK and DH - two bands I wanted to like just for their names (esp Yahpet Kotto, being a wild fan of Allonso Mosely, and Gee on Homicide). If there's a Champs connection to this band, sold! I'll check out that page.

sorry to name-drop again, but our friend's band just hosted ATP in london, and phil (previously mentioned) said that high on fire were the best show at the festival. so hold out hope, my friend.

funny, i'm listening to the ****ing champs right now.
also been digging old bad brains, jawbreaker, the pogues, dropkick murphys, sufjan stevens, the ditty bops, and one particular song done by sinead o'connor and the chieftains, "the foggy dew"...irish song almost a hundred years old about a battle between irish forces and british troops outside dublin one easter morning.

the only connection between YK and the ****in Champs is very similar cover art... but if you check out YK make sure it's "The Killer was in the Government Blankets." everything else isn't as good.
