speaking of changing your life, on myspace today i got a poll about 5 albums that changed my life.

I've been working on this list all bloody day and I can't cut it down past 16. I GIVE UP

Number one will always be bad brains s/t

new make believe as in shock of being? or is there another new one? i do have shock of being on the 180 gram vinyl and on cd because, yes, i am that big of a dork. the last time i saw them i picked up the ep on vinyl, and it has a few extra songs, which a re sweet. super low production of the vinyl i think. white labelled, and no indication of record label and what not... i also have that double 7" with them, joan of arc, love of everything, and boring azz owen.

They Might Be Giants - They Might Be Giants
Primus - Sailing the Seas of Cheese
Braid - Age of Octeen
Lorelei - Everyone Must Touch the Stove
Diggable Planets - Reachin... (A New Refutation of Time & Space)

I will also include three huge honorable mentions. They're not albums in the exact sense, but compilations of songs that've had a huge impact on me as each part has come out.

Christie Front Drive - s/t
Braid - Movie Music Volume 1
Scrog - Discography

yeah, shock of being. i had the plan of preordering vinyl and cd as well! but no follow through on my part as i am lazy when it comes to music. i still haven't replaced my friend/enemy and my live in muenster which are lost... i have that double too, and yes, the owen is boring as can be. did you get the pink 7inch from their first tour? "please donot mistake my weakness for kindness" and some song with the word "vampire" in the title!!

no ****. Do you know Rob from the station, too? I met Guy after begging him to play my old band's ep back in the day. Tell him I said hi and that I still hate My Bloody Valentine (let the arguments begin).

Many many many +1's.

Do you know if anyone has those songs as mp3's? I know Crank put out a cdep of that split (like, years later) so I know they gotta be SOMEWHERE....

re: sea of tombs... i bought it blindly, but figured it'd be good since its on gravity records and having found it in the used section under clikitat ikatowi. did they release anything other than that one album? anything else related that's similar? i really liked that album a lot.

Sea of Tombs was (is?) Bill Skibbe, Jessica Ruffins and Mario Rubalcaba... Bill and Jessica played together in a band called Jaks, Jessica played in one of the later incarnations of Lake of Dracula (with Weasel Walter from the flying luttenbachers, the drummer fromthe scissor girls and someone from US Maple), and Mario has played in Clikatat Ikatowi, Black Heart Procession, Rocket From The Crypt, Hot Snakes and probably a bunch of others. AFAIK, they only released that one EP.

Bill and Jessica currently run a fantastic recording studio in Benton Harbor, MI, called Key Club Recording.

Some of the other Clikatat dudes have turned up recently in Spacehorse and Earthless, both of whom have stuff out on Gravity.

my friend/enemy cd was in my civic when it was stolen. i lost so much good music from that. i do indeed have that pink 7" as well. so you haven't heard shock of being? you've seen many of the songs live though i would imagine? it's good, of course.

i haven't seen them since that first initial tour. i havent even heard the songs! i have dial up at home (booo) and no soundcard at work. i am thoroughly and royally screwed in the music department...

god that friend enemy cd makes me weep sometimes, so so so good. i'm getting my next copy on vinyl, harder to misplace! do you by chance know if that JOA live in muenster is still available? i thought i read it was limited release of some sort... i have the case, but no cd!!

darn. i believe i saw it in the used bin at the local big record shop here... good god do i hate going in there though. i'd rather pay through the teeth and get it off of good old insound (which is where i got it originally i believe! with the bundini brown 12 inch and that rabbit rabbit / joa split! all in one big order! haha. i wonder what the dude who sent the package thought? "loser!" probably...)

i think i have an extra gold swirl copy of the gap on vinyl if you want it? i can look when i get home.

so I've been rotating 2 albums and one playlist-

Part Chimp- I am Come. These guys are on Mogwai's Rock Action label, I just saw them a couple nights ago kinda by accident. All I have to say is DAMN. Kinda Sabbath/Sonic Youth/Bloody Valentine/KARP-ish, and really friggin loud. And I mean loud like damn near Lightning Bolt loud. Awesomeness.

The Duke Spirit- Cuts Across the Land. These guys are on tour with Ted Leo, it's good not-too-fast noisy indie rock, with some pretty cool female vocals that sound like a more naturally gifted Kim Gordon (if that makes any sense at all). Good stuff.

Playlist- my personal 'best of' o.g. emo:
*Current-Leech
*The Hated-Everysong
*Honeywell-You and Me
*Boys Life-Tucked In
*Mohinder-The Message
*Julia-Charge vs. Change
*Navio Forge-A Hole Into
*Indian Summer-Angry Son
*Portraits of Past-Bang Yer Head
*Kerosene 454-Continued
*Swing Kids-Clean Shade of Dirty
*Maximillian Colby-Sifelaver
*Policy Of Three-1%
*Split Lip-Yellow Like Gold
*Noneleftstanding-Flowers and Candy
*Christie Front Drive-Bowl
*Antioch Arrow-Lightning Bolt
*Hoover-Weeds

hahaha the only semi duplicate i have is the busy bus, sunny sun 7 inch release in the picture frame and regular sleeve. actually, i have to keep my dorkiness with it at bay so i don't start getting every color of vinyl they release...

nice list. similar to what i woulda had on my mix if i could rip vinyl... i'm not a huge fan of honeywell (anyone want the lp and reach out split?), kerosene 454, boys life, split lip, christie front, or noneleftstanding. never got much into the mid-west stuff

some stuff you left off that i'd put on that aren't on my list would be second story window, don martin 3, floodgate, moss icon, still life, sleepytime trio, evergreen, embassy...

03-25-06, 02:33 PM
I actually had Embassy, Sleepytime, Still Life, Second Story Window, Floodgate, Moss Icon, and Evergreen on the playlist, along with Ordination of Aaron, Merel, Iconoclast, Guyver-1, Friction, Cap'n Jazz, and Emo Summer (for laughs), but I wanted to make a burnable playlist to give out to a couple of friends, so they all got the axe.
