Good for you! Try and find a local club that races and get hooked up with them. Do some of their training rides. Most towns have local rides that the faster fitness riders and racers do. Try to find those. Talk to your LBS to find these. Read some of the threads on the forum. Go to USA Cycling's web page, (you'll at least find out what you need to do to get a license, and how the categories work)
Find a book on training, I do the Carmichael Training System program so I recommend Chris Carmichael's book. Friel's book on training is another. And have fun!

Oh, and also, accept as an unfortunate fact that a lot of people in our sport are going to be about as helpful as the above post.

God, it's true. That was such an upbeat book. I'm amazed it's by the same Greg Lemond who regularly says things like "1991 is the year a lot of riders started doping" and "I'm very dissapointed that Lance Armstrong talked to Michele Ferrari"

1991? That would be the year Lemond started to get dropped?

Lemond was a great champion. I have fond memories of him in the late 80's and early 90's. I hung on until the mid 90's thinking that maybe just maybe that winning form would return for just one more Tour. The '94 Tour was when reality slapped me in the face when he was getting dropped on the flat stages and had to withdraw.

He was strong as hell in the '91 Tour...even though he had one bad day in the mountains that cost him the race. Those were some epic Tours back then.
