Hey all-

I need some help and figured this was the best place to turn. I am interested in what looks like an early to mid-90's Diamondback Apex mountain bike. It has a steel frame and mid fork eyelets. Wondering if anyone has any info about them. It looks like a good frame to build up for an off-road tourer. Forgot to look at the rear cassette to see how many gears.

Also, can you spread the rear triangle to install a larger (wider) cassette, as I don't have any experience with this. Is it possible, and if so, what type of problems could you run into, now and later down the road.

As I recall the Apex was one of the higher grades of Diamondback moutain bikes. I think it was just above the Ascent but that was some time ago.

I CAN tell you this though - that era Diamondback made VERY good, reliable and strong bikes. If you can get one you can feel completely comfortable with the quality.

Seems to me that my local shop dealer has an Apex in his collection with a Browning Electric Shift mechanism on it.

The dropouts are not spaced 135mm already?

The hub body gets narrower as you get wider clusters. They all fit in 135mm spread common for mtb.

Thanks for all the info. Looking forward to checking out the bike again and perhaps even getting a chance to build up my first steel tourer.
