Well NC has finally stepped up to acknowledge there are lots of riders out there. They are taking orders for personalized tags for bikers with portion of proceeds going to assist bike related issues in the state. One step closer towards progress.........we'll take it in baby steps! :D :D :D

NC still needs only 5 applications for the 300 required.

NC still needs only 5 applications for the 300 required.See my post in an earlier thread (http://www.bikeforums.net/showpost.php?p=1888525&postcount=12) for some reasons why road cyclists should avoid sending their hard earned money to the bureaucrats at NCDOT every year (it's an annual fee for the plate).

I also disagree with the effectiveness of this license plate program, and of the STR message in general.

However, what message would be sent to the bureaucrats at NCDOT if the state could not get a mere 300 applications for this tag?

However, what message would be sent to the bureaucrats at NCDOT if the state could not get a mere 300 applications for this tag? That the people won't meekly accept NCDOT's long-standing pattern of interference with the right of each and every person to travel the public's ways by whatever means that person chooses, unless that means poses an extraordinary danger to the person or property of others.

I saw at my LBS they had the applications on the counter where you check out. I thought that was a great way to get the message out.

Bruce, what Supreme Court case is this a quote from? I've seen this quote used by everyone from cyclists to hybrid-car fanatics to pedestrian-activists.

I'm just curious what Supreme Court case established the right to travel.

Rather than paying $30 every year to fund more of that kind "bicycle education", cyclists in N.C. could do what some other cyclists have already done: get some nice looking stickers with a less ambiguous message (such as "Same Roads, Same Rights, Same Rules"), put 'em on your vehicle(s) and then hand out any extras to your friends.
Looks like the tag is going to be approved. There were 299 applications when I last checked.
- I'll start designing some stickers with alternative messages. Have any other good phrases in mind?

[...] what Supreme Court case established the right to travel.Quoting from a state Supreme Court decision (http://www.wisbar.org/res/sup/1996/93-2842.html):
The right to travel has long been recognized by the courts as inherent in our constitutional concepts of personal liberty...Because that right is fundamental, the [U.S. Supreme] Court reasoned, "any classification which serves to penalize the exercise of that right, unless shown to be necessary to promote a compelling government interest, is unconstitutional."
U.S. courts have consistently held that the extraordinary danger to others and their property posed by heavy equipment operation (including driving heavy motor vehicles) in a public area (such as a road) is such a compelling government interest. In contrast, human powered travel (whether on foot or wheel) has not been held to create a level of danger to others that would allow the state (i.e., government) to infringe upon a person's right to travel on that basis.

OK, thanks for the Wisconsin Sup Ct citation. But, what's the citation for the William Douglas quote?

I'll start designing some stickers with alternative messages. Have any other good phrases in mind?Well, the Bicycle Coalition of Maine has some on the stickers that it sells (http://www.bikemaine.org/store/stickers.htm), including "My other vehicle is my BICYCLE" and "Cars smell bad. Go by bike instead."

[...] what's the citation for the William Douglas quote?Concurring in Aptheker v. State, 378 US 500 (1964) (http://caselaw.lp.findlaw.com/cgi-bin/getcase.pl?navby=volpage&court=us&vol=378&page=515), former Justice Douglas stated as regards the First Amendment (citations omitted):Freedom of movement, at home and abroad, is important for job and business opportunities -- for cultural, political, and social activities -- for all the commingling which gregarious man enjoys. Those with the right of free movement use it at times for mischievous purposes. But that is true of many liberties we enjoy. We nevertheless place our faith in them, and against restraint, knowing that the risk of abusing liberty so as to give rise to punishable conduct is part of the price we pay for this free society. Freedom of movement is kin to the right of assembly and to the right of association.… This freedom of movement is the very essence of our free society, setting us apart. Like the right of assembly and the right of association, it often makes all other rights meaningful….Once the right to travel is curtailed, all other rights suffer, just as when curfew or home detention is placed on a person.

I'll start designing some stickers with alternative messages. Have any other good phrases in mind?I thought of some more:
Bicycling each day helps keep the air pollution away
Help reduce traffic jams; be nice to bicyclists
Even when my vehicle is slower, my right to travel is the same
