Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Not gonna be a weight weenie but...

...just how heavy should a singlespeed be? I'm starting out with some pretty hefty wheels (Alex DH-22/36h with Suzue JR hubs) and a 61cm True Temper double-butted and lugged Trek frameset. It's, obviously, stripped of derailleurs,shifters, double crankset, and 6 speed freewheel so if it weighed 24 pounds or so from the factory should I expect a significant drop in weight?

you'll notice a difference...it'll be lighter...maybe not as much as you'd think. but i'd say you'll lose 3-4 pounds. just an estimate.

RD, FD, shifters, cables, rear cassette, 2 chainrings should be well above 2 pounds of weight loss.

And since you're shooting for low weight, you might as well go fixed and lose a rear brake / cable / brake lever as well, because you know you're going to do it eventually.

mine went down to about 19-20 pounds. and that's with an old style bottom bracket, steel bars, and a steel chain ring. oh and if it helps any, the bianchi chrome pista comes in at about 20 pounds too off the shelf, so don't worry.

My single speed 80's road bike with fenders, a front and rear brake, a b-17, and a nitto technomic big assed stem and 700x28 shrader tires weights 26 pounds. Throw in my 190 pounds and 2-4 pounds isnt much either way.

When you bunnyhop, you don't have to lift your own weight by the pedals, and when you stand up and hammer, your weight is pressing down on the pedals as opposed to the "dead" weight of the bike you have to accelerate. 2-4 pounds is a lot.

how much does one brake, a cable and a lever weight? doesnt weigh that much does it?

a set of good shimano brakes weigh about 350g. but if you only use one then lets say 175G for a brake. my brake levers (cyclo cross levers) are about 90gs. but i only use one, so lets say 45G

220G for a lever and a brake. keep in mind that a pound is 450grams.
