Ok, I really like the look of the Deep-V rims and such, but the aeroheads are cool looking too, just not AS cool. As far as strength, I am sure that the Deep V's are stronger, but I know velocity is extremely liberal when dealing with warrantee issues. Anyway, is there any reason that I should spend the extra bucks for the nicer wheels, or are the aeroheads going to serve me well and be aesthetically pleasing?

Thanks,
Colin

deep v's are ugly, and overkill...aeroheads are sweet. so, in turn...get the aeroheads, you won't be dissapointed.

aeroheads are plenty strong, and lighter than deepv's.

deepV's look pretty cool in colors like pink, green, etc. but if you're going for silver/black anyway, i'd stick to something less aero.

also, you could look into the fusions.. somewhere between the 2... i ride em and like em.
maybe search the forums on this topic too.

Another vote for the arrowheads...so light...so cheap...

i have the deep v's, but i kind of wish i went aero. i think the v's are little bit of overkill and flashy. but the colors are fun.

was considering getting deep v rims since everyone says they're so uberly strong. however, I'm using 700x38 tires. not going to happen, is it?

it certainly won't be easy...v's are pretty damn narrow to be running 38s

you should be fine with either. i never found any evidence that one was substantially better than the other, when i was trying to figure this out myself.

personally, i prefer the look of deep-v's over aeroheads in red, which is the color i wanted them in. i prefer the look of the deep-v's on my mark v, as well, because of the teardrop shaped tubing on the frame.

when i get another bike, who knows.

I thought that one could get the aeroheads in Silver, Blue, Red, Yellow, and Black. IRO's website says, "We can supply wheels build in any color rim that Velocity makes."

{with a picture of the Red, Blue, Yellow, & Black) next to the text.

I was actually surprised to see that the wheels are built with aeroheads. I am also considering having a set of wheels built up for my Trek 2100, and aerohead rims are near the top of my list.

Actually, my wheels are yellow, but they're always so dirty the kinda look green.

I run a 26x1.75 Continental Top Touring on my rear wheel and a 26x1.3 Hutchinson Top slick (http://www.awcycles.co.uk/products.php?plid=m5b157s122p8437) in yellow on the front. It's an older tire they don't make/sell anymore and I blew out the matching rear a while ago unfortunately.

The deep-v rims I have a MTB rims, they take standard mountain tires. You can go just about as fat as you want on there. Actually, the look really awesome with BIG FAT tires on them, 'cuz it makes the "V" shape even more pronounced.

the 700c rims are probably a bit narrower, but I'd imagine you could still fit a 38 on there without too much difficulty.

If you REALLY want bomb-proof, the Dyad rim that Velocity makes is even tougher, and is made for tandem/touring applications and will take a BIG tire.

The aerohead rims are pretty awesome. I want bombproof and I REALLY don't care about weight, so I go deep, but I hear nothing but good about the Aeroheads from people who use them.

looked at the dyads and may end up getting them, but they lack the deepness of the deep v which I assume is what provides the strength.

I do like the way fat tires look when mounted on skinny rims, but not if it's at the cost of the tire randomly popping off.

the deepness of the "V" provides much of the strength, yes, but the walls on the dyad are REALLY thick. I mean, if you look at the cross-section of the dyad vs. the deep-v I've added here the difference is pretty substantial

My comment was general, and not directed towards you :)

no worries, i just thought i'd clarify.

while some have mentioned the deep v's being heavier than the aeroheads, doesn't the design of the deep v's offer a bit more "rotational momentum?" i put that in quotes because i'm not sure what the proper term is for it.

It shouldn't be a problem. I've run 700x52 knobbies and 700x60 slicks on my bontrager race lite wheels, and they've got mighty narrow rims.

that's pretty convincing if they're that much thicker. where are those diagrams from?

I "borrowed" them from the website of a vendor that our shop sometimes buys those rims from. It's not open to the public. I happened to know that their paper catalog has those cross-sections in it, so I figured their internet catalog might have the same and it did.
