I know I could prob figure this out mathematically, but...I'd rather just ask you all...

I have 1 in. 'horizontal' dropouts for my fixie conversion...My hub right now sits pretty close to the front (open) end of the dropout

I'm running a gear (42x16) that's prob on the lower end of what I would like to flip flop to... I wanna get a lower toothed cog to put on the other side to get into a higher gear, and it would be ideal if I could use the flip/flop without having to break my chain and add a link or something

my question is can I get away with going down 2 teeth from a 16tooth to a 14tooth (or might I be stuck sticking to 1tooth down)? or rather....what have yall managed to get away with (or not managed to get away with) in your experiences ?

i just figured that I'd have to buy a slightly longer chain and place the wheel a little farther back in the dropouts when i go fixed, should i pick up a freewheel.

you can usually get away with 2 teeth in the back pretty painlessly...you'll be fine

1 cog tooth==1/8" of movement backwards/forwards in the dropouts.

is it a track dropout? if so , the axle is close to the open end of a drop out now, puting a smaller cog would make the chain very loose...

Um, you could read the guy's post and get the answer... It's a conversion...

To the OP - agreed on the 3 teeth. Go for it.

i flip from a 20T to a 14T and i go from nearly the front to nearly the end of the dropouts. if i can do this with 6T, you can almost certainly pull off your plan.
