Foo - I heard the snap of a broken leg last night...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. So, last night, i was playing co-ed soccer in the city league. The girl on my team had a 50/50 challenge with the keeper, she planted her foot, the overweight keeper dove out onto the planted foot, and all i could hear was the snap of the tibia and fibia (sp?) It sounded awful, and her screams didnt sound all that nice either. After the game i had to have a few pints so i could forget that awfull sound.
So, i was wondering, whats the worst injury you've seen/heard?
When i worked at a golf course last year, a guy accidently ran over himself with one of these machines...

His leg was stuck under the wheel until someone finally came and found him (this happened at 5.15am). Luckilly it only took a few minutes for someone to find him, but they mustve been the longest 3 minutes of his life. I saw his leg afterwards, and it was flattened, i felt pretty bad after that, so i drove my machine away from the scene, and layed down for 15 minutes because i felt like passing out.

That's disturbing.
This summer, I was playing with a bunch of kids at a church campout. Some 13 year old makes a running jump for a header long after I'd already bumped it clear and smacked me in the nose with his forehead. I remember thinking my nose felt funny and being disturbed for half a second before the blood started pooring out. To be honest, the blood was a good distraction. I hate broken bones. It's still crooked.

My uncle had his arm pulled into the rollers at a lumber mill.
He was stuck up to the shoulder for several hours while the machine was dismantled.
The only other option was to reverse the roller direction - the arm would have been crushed twice.
He has most of the usage of the damaged limb after years of surgery and therapy.
I was running down some stairs, took a turn as I planted my foot, and snapped my tibia and fibula in 6 places. It sounded more like a bang than a crack. My leg was mangled in a Z shape. It took 3 hours to get to a hospital. I said lots of bad words.

Collar bone. 30mph, over the bars right at the pavement. Yowch :(
Another time, I was playing hockey in gym class and took a slapshot to the face (the stick hit me, not the puck). My front teeth got pushed back horizontal to the top of my mouth, the back of one of my teeth chipped, and my nose poured a ton of blood. Wasn't that painful, but it looked insane
I was jumping off a swingset, got some massive air, landed on the balls of my feet, and drove one of my heels right into my testicles when I landed. Super yowch :(

I have personal stories that are both similar to the ones you mentioned....and one or two more. ;)
I was the fat kid that broke the other kids bone. When I was about 12, playing little league baseball I broke a kids arm sliding into home. He (small kid playing catcher) had the ball back way before I was there....all I could do was slide and hope to knock the ball out...well I did, but the little kids arm broke too. Yes I felt like $h1t!!
Lawn mower......when I was about 15 I drove a riding lawnmower at full speed THROUGH a loose barbed wire fence. Long story......it was obviously an accident, but one that came out of my stupidity. Injury wasn't too bad....just some scars on my right leg/knee.
I heard a story, somewhat local (it was somewhere here in FL) about a guy mowing the grass on the sides of the roads who accientally mowed over (and obviously killed) a 2 year old boy who hid in the grass where he was mowing.
My brother has the worst injury in our childhood though.....he went on a haywagon ride with a church at Halloween time one year (he was about 10). A girl fell off the wagon and got run over by it, it shattered her pelvis and did much other serious damage. She lived, but had pins and all kinds of problems that will last her whole life. Well, 10 minutes after the ambulance took her away, they turned around and were heading back, my brother fell off and got run over. He, though, was run over lengthwise...the tired went all the way up his leg, his side and across his face (the girl it ran over shortwise, across her pelvis). By a miracle he had no inuries worse than a bruise in the shape of tire tread that lasted a month or two all the way up his body and across his face.

I've seen 3 (three!) separate motorcycle / taxicab collisions in NYC. None looked like any fun at all.

KingTermite - you've just reminded me of an old roommate, who stuck his head out of a stopped Metro-North train to see what station he was at and got it caught in the doors as they closed. Luckily, he managed to pry them open and pull his head in before he was seriously injured, but he had bruises in straight lines up both sides of his head from the doors for weeks.

did the blades hit him or just the tire? this is also another reason why sheep are superior lawn mowers...
they fertalize the ground
they dont chop you up
they do all the work.
i haven't seen many of other injuries...
Personal: Five years old, stuck my right hand in a wringer washers moving rollers, and then pulled my hand back against the rotation of the wringers. Total blistering of the skin on the palm of my hand. Today, my right index finger won't straighten past 45 degrees at the second knuckle.
Worst Iv'e seen: The remains of my brother-in-laws Honda CB-750 that met a Chevy Impala head on at an estimated combined speed in excess of 130MPH. Not a pretty sight.

no, the blades didnt get him. He put one foot on the ground right behind the wheel, and when he pulled his other foot off it got caught on the reverse pedal, and SNAPPOOO!!
Sheep would be nice and cheap, but they cant cut crass to one thousand'th of an inch precision! :D

Here's my worst.
I was about 10. Riding my bike in the park when i slid on some lose sand, and knocked my head to the curb. No helmet back in those days. I was throwing up blood on the way to hospital. I have cracked open my head almost 180 degrees around. I was in coma for a few days with doctors giving me 50-50, and then I woke up. Missed almost a full year of school. Everything was fine since. I used to get a lot of migraines after that, but its been getting a lot better lately.
Also my dad got hit by a car while riding a bike few years ago. Ended up with several broken ribs, and collar bone. We had to wheel him around the house in his office chair, just so he can pee :( Luckily he had a helmet.
My family and bikes have a LOOONG history. I know I will die while riding one day.

Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwww..seen that website a few times, WARNING SUPER GRAPHIC WEBSITE!!!
Painful things that have happened to me:
-10 pound container fell on foot from 8 feet high
-somehow breaking big toe in 3 places by accidentally running and snapping my foot back hard
-nailed in the chest from wipeout on bike
-falling at Blue Mountain and leaving a 2 inch and 6 inch gash on my left arm
and the final most painful one was jumping stairs on my bike, my feet flew off the pedals and I landed 100% on my..err..."sack" and rolling around on the ground for awhile.

My worst two-1)breaking my right ankle, looked like Joe Theisman, 2)getting a jellyfish tentacle in my eye. If I had to choose one to do over, it wouldn't be the tentacle...

Well, if its not broken bones then I have one.
Stung by a scorpion. Twice!! (same f#ck#r, stung me in the thigh and then in the knee). My friends killed it (I was in so much pain I don't remember much) and got me to the hospital. Turns out it was a non-lethal species (I remember at points during the ride there I wanted to die because I was in so much pain).
Ironic thing is that I have never been stung by a bee or a wasp.
Bikewise, stupid bike trick gone wrong (my brother and I ), went face first into the wall of the house. Knocked out my front milk teeth.

I've been stung by lots of bugs, but never a scorpion. Worst one that comes to mind was a yellow jacket that was on the seat of my car, this was many years ago. It kinda half-way stung me while I was delivering a pizza, I wasn't sure what was going on. After I got out with the pizza, then back in, it got me good in a bad spot. I knew for sure at that point.

Worst I've done was a broken jaw, with a couple chipped teeth. I was blacked out drunk when it happened, so it didn't hurt until the next morning. That's when I felt the big chunk missing from my skin under my beard - made getting stitches a LOT of fun. I looked pretty bad after they shaved part of it off then sewed me back up. I also couldn't figure out why my ears wouldn't pop (you know that feeling when you change elevation quickly? like that) and then felt the blood that was dried on each of them. I'd pushed the jaw through the ear canals. The doctors that first looked at me couldn't believe that I walked in there. They all thought that I'd fractured the base of my skull, which would have killed me. I was still digging peices of my left eardrum out almost a year later - dried little black chunks encased in wax. I don't hear as good out of that ear anymore...
The worst sober and aware of it was having a wisdom tooth pulled. It was really busy at work for several months and I hate dentists, so I hadn't done anything about the absess for a LONG time. It got so bad that I had to leave work one night and go to the emergency room to get a shot of novacaine and a script for some codine. Later that week I got into the dentist, and they said it had to come out. I could wait ANOTHER week or two to get in to an oral surgeon so I could be put under, or they could do it right then with only novacaine. Thankfully, both the dentist and the assistant were cute girls, and had lots of nice, soothing words. Still the sound of them working the tooth back and forth, and then it pulling out... Amplified through my skull, no way to avoid it... Man, that was bad.
Other than that, it's mostly just road rash, and hurting my left shoulder a lot. It doesn't really work right anymore...

He was close enough spelling it. :p :D
One of the worst ones I have seen was 70km/h head on into a tree in a DH race. Cracked his full face helmet really badly, ripped off the jaw section of the helmet. He was walking around, messed up blood gushing out of his mouth, he opened his mouth and his lowe middle two teeth were on two levels. The Jaw Had been snapped down the centre.

personally the worst things that have happened to me are:
-lots of dislocated fingers - god they are disgusting
-Hyperextended my knee real bad in a 50/50 challenge playing soccer, was in so much pain i didnt want to look at my knee because i thought it was rotated 90 degrees the wrong way, luckilly i just tore the ligaments.
-Had surgery to repair a slipped disc in my spine back in febuary, i still havent recovered. Just thinking about it a few days ago, i wanted the doctors to take a picture of the spine. How many people can say they've seen their spine!! (X-rays, CT Scans and MRI's dont count)

My own most gruesome personal experience was on a Wed. morning ride with our club about 14 years ago. Coming back from Solvang on the 101 and we just passed an on-ramp. I hear the sound of a car coming on and it was getting a little too loud too quickly. BAMM! The guy was riding the white-line and plowed into the left-hand column of our double-paceline. Chip got flipped up onto the windshield, smashed his back & skull in, was probably dead right then. Ken was shorter, so he got hit squarely by the front-end of the car. Snapped his bike to smithereens and impaled him on his seatpost down to the top-tube. Noticed amongst all the gushing blood that his leg was missing. They found it stuck to the grill of the car which had continued down the highway and crashed off about 300m down the road. The guy was drunk at over twice the legal limit. I decided to do the EMT thing that day...
One of my favorite high-school teachers who taught PE and History would ride his bike to and from school everyday. Problem was he didn't wear a helmet. One day, after going around a corner with separate curved turn-lane, he got rear-ended by a car. They were probably turning right and was looking left for traffic and ran him over. I remember driving by and seeing them scoop his brains off the pavement...
When I was 4, one of my friends got blown up by a landmine. Shock and PTSS probably blocked it out completely, so I don't remember anything. My mom told me about it years later...
I was there when a friend of 4 years (17 years old) was killed hitting a tree at estimated 110 MPH. He was crushed so bad it was over in minutes, I held his hand as he died :(

4 months in a cast. Healed wrong, so had to be rebroken. Another 7 months in a full leg cast. 2 months more in a walking cast. Still can't bend my heel all the way.
And since we're listing injuries:
broken leg
broken right arm - radius and ulna each snapped in 2 places.
broken left arm - joint at humerus broken with tendons/ligaments pulled.
finger crushed by 40 lb rock.
coccyx shattered in misjudged BMX jump.
numerous concussions.
stabbed in the ribs.
bitten by pitbull.
I'm sure there's more.

I don't know how, but i've never broken any bones besides my hand (boxer's fracture or sometihng the doc said) when I punched a door, twice. First time I didn't know I broke it, hurt like hell but I didn't know, second time a few months later I knew it had to be broken cause it was pushing through the skin. and doc informed me I broke it before cause of the new bone growth visable on the x-ray and the doc couldn't set the bone right either. Now my right hand is crooked.
Nothing really bad, just sprained my knees, ankles, hyperextended everything at least once, bit through my lip twice during wrestling that had to get stitched (couldn't smile for 2 weeks!) and cut the bridge of my nose from my football helmet coming down. Buts that really about it...
