Bicycle Mechanics - Eliminating Avid canti brake squeal

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
i've got avid cantilever brakes on my jamis nova cyclocross bike (a great commuting weapon, btw). the brakes work great but they emit a horrendous squealing noise, even when properly toed in. is there a replacement pad that will eliminate the squeal? will a different canti brake do the trick? or is squealing an inherent feature of all canti brakes?
thanks in advance ....

are your rims clean?
yup, clean. the bike squealed like a pig since it was brand new.

Just get some thick soled shoes and next time you have to stop just stick your foot out!

If you find out please let me know! I have them on my commuter, and the have been squealing since not long after I put them on. After trying every conceivable suggested remedy, As an EXTREME test I put on a brand new wheel with squeaky clean rim AND new Kool Stop brake pads. Still squealing like a baby pig. If you check the archives, others have had the same complaint.
rainman ... is it an avid problem, or an issue with all cantilevers? i've got an ancient pair of shimanos that i could try, i guess.
