I want to buy some replacement spokes for my 2006 Trek 520 to have as spares while on tour, but I can't seem to figure out the many spoke calculators on the net. Can anyone help me out?

Both front and rear rims are the same, Bontrager Maverick.

They both have 36 spokes.

The sticker on both rims says ETRTO: 622/559x18, ERD: 604/542 v0

Front hubs are Shimano Deore LX HB-M570 VIA M

Rear hubs are Shimano Deore LX FH-M570 VIA M

based on your information (604 ERD, deore lx hubs )and assuming stock 3 cross lacing. According to DT's calculator, the front will take 293mm and the rear will take 291 on the cassette side and 292 on the left side. for spares you only need the 292 mm length spokes since the lengths are very close. Check these on the wheels to be sure before you go anywhere

Do I need to get the same gauge spokes as what is currently on the bike or will it not matter whether I get 14gauge versus 15gauge versus 14/15 double butted?

Take the bike to the shop and have them match the spokes up once you get in the ball park. I tie mine under the rear rack with a couple of zip ties so that they are always there and always handy.
