Today, I was on foot/train. On the way home, as I started up the stairs in the train station, my train arrived. I beat it up the stairs just in time to see the train doors closing.
I grabbed the doors like the Macho Man that I am. Unlike elevator doors, train doors just keep closing, unless you get really aggressive. I got really aggressive.
"BEEEEEEEEEEP!"
Whew! The doors popped back open. While the alarm was still screaching, I sat down as if all was nomal. Meanwhile, this high-pitched, ear-piercing "Beeeeeeeeeeep!" was continuously ringing throughout the crowded car. I waited for the squealing to stop, but it kept on and on. And on... "I'll wait until it quits. Man, this is a little embarrassing," I thought to myself.
But it never quit. It screamed in our ears for what seemed about 2 or 3 minutes. I knew everyone had to be getting upset at me by now for holding up the train, jamming the doors and causing temporary hearing loss like that. A couple of people glanced my way. I tried to act like I was asleep.
Finally, a voice over the loud speaker echoed, "THIS TRAIN IS NO LONGER IN SERVICE. ALL PASSENGERS PLEASE LEAVE THE TRAIN."
Oh my gosh! Now I have about 500 people marooned on the platform! At least the nice people in my car were the only ones who knew it was my fault.
Then the train operator appeared, walking briskly down each successive car, until he reached the other end of the train, where a second engine was located. The train sped off in reverse,
completely empty. I have no idea how many trains following had to stop and wait for this valiant man to ditch his broken vehicle.
I didn't wait to find out. I slipped through the crowd and got on a bus instead!
That's what I like about MARTA--versatility!
