Freddie Fenders - Hardcore vs. SpeedEZ ??

Hi All,

After getting my "good" bike filthy riding yesterday here in CT. I am going to fit my old Trek mtn bike out as a winter bike. I will be riding it on the road. I am looking at full length fenders from Planet Bike. http://www.planetbike.com/fenders.html

Can anyone give my any feedback on the Hardcore vs. SpeedEZ as far as setup, durability, favoring one over the other...etc.

I've install a bunch of the Freddy fenders, I highly recommend( I'm a mech,not a speller)them, If you want to keep them on all winter.

Hardcore is the only way to go unless you have a specific reason why you need the speedezs.

I believe you need to have eyelets on your rear triangle & front fork for the Hardcores to work ??

I would prefer to use the hardcores but I don't think I have eyelets on my front shock....I do have them on the back though....

I have no eyelets to. I used a high end zip tie for my hardcore fenders on the front fork works great.

I have used the hardcores for 3 winters with no problems. 700 to 900 miles each winter.

So you just do the zip tie thing with the mounts ?
I just ordered the Hardcores.......
So just how cold do you ride ????

Right now I have clothing good enough to 32 but I would have to buy better clothing to ride in colder weather.......I just can't get excited about riding rollers for the next 4 months......I'm trying to set myself up so that I can at least try a get a couple rides in on the weekends if it isn't too cold and/or snowy.... :(

My record is -37F + -60F wind chill. That was not fun, back about 3 years ago. I had just installed the fenders two weeks before that ride. I still use that original zip tie. You should be able to find them at car audio shop or music supply store. They have a more rubber feel to them then cheap plastic ones.

I would be happy to ride down to 15F.
So tell me, how would you dress for a 15F ride ?....so I know what I have to pick up ;)

Is there any special name or something for those rubberized zip ties ???
My first thought is what I would have to do to protect my frame from the metal connectors on the fender...especially since the winter bike I'm fitting out is cro-moly... :rolleyes:

I'm not sure it was something I had laying around for years. Look for 3M zip ties or something with a metal locking clip, thicker the better.

Being Nuts is what keeps the cagers at bay. :D

When we get all the thaw and slush crapolla , how do the fenders work out? Don't they just get jammed with ice? Or is there really no real consequence.

Anyone kept fenders on @ -30C. Any cracking of fenders due to excess cold and fender getting brittle?

My LBS dosn't sell the wider fenders so I never thought about it. Sure would save a lot of slop hittin' every crank part etc. and of course my big Toe!

A couple of pics of how they are mounted with no eyelets.

Take your time don’t cut any of the stainless steel arms until you are sure they fit just right.

I held the fender in place and then added a mark on the stainless steel bracket. I then bent the bracket over to fit the fork cross over.

Take your time with it this does work.

I have never had any problems with jamming during winter slushy rides even with Nokian studded 294s tires. No cracking for the Freddy fenders in below –37F temps.

I bought the SpeedEZs for my 7300fx. The bike has eyelets and the Hardcores would have worked, but I thought that I needed fenders that I could remove easily during non rainy/snowy seasons. I think they work OK, but I wish I had bought the Hardcores instead. With SpeedEZs the rubber straps that go around the seat stays and the fork are difficult to position correctly. Also, they tend to rattle more than I would like since they are not fixed as permanently as the Hardcores would be.

To cut a long story short, if you don't mind keeping them on the bike, get the Hardcores.

Taking Hardcores shouldn't that big a chore would it? Looks pretty basic as long as its not a weekly past time.

i just got the hardcore two weeks ago. i bought a used fork with eyelets. i tried to mount it first with zipties but it sucked. i love them im so dry now.

True. I just wanted something I could just take off without unscrewing things. The SpeedEZs come with straps with pegs on them which makes removal easy; however, it makes the mount a loft "softer", i.e., with more scope for things moving around.
