Does anyone have a suggestion for easy/solid installation of "keirin" style grips on the Nitto bars?

I heard to use hairspray as a lubricant to help it slide on.

Anything else?

it's not much fun. soap + water works very well, if you have time to let it dry out before riding.

hairspray works the best. or gasoline. or the kerin rubber cement.

hmm - familiar thread.

windex and beer
just make sure you drink the latter and not the former.

Make sure they're warm-ish. put them in hot water for a bit. Makes them more pliable. But people always make fun of me when I suggest this.

That being said, I can put on a pair in about three minutes.

you guys ROCK!!!!
I was afraid this would be moved to the Track forum before you guys had a shot at suggestions.
p.s. Glad to have the windex suggestion..since I am fresh out of hairspray :D

Does Guinness Extra Stout qualify as an acceptable beer, or should I go out and get a Kirin Ichi Ban or Sapporo Draft?

Good thing Ceya locked himself out of the forum... Or else he'd be having a fit about why you should use rubber cement.

i was always told rubbing alcohol, but i didn't have any so i poured a jigger of vodka in each, swilled it around and, um, "discarded" the rest. the grips went on super-easy and of course booze evaporates quicker than water, soapy water, beer, ky etc.

soak in very hot water, pour rubbing alcohol inside, they slide on easy as pie.

When I put mine on with soapy water, they want on smooth but took several days to dry.
I'd definitely go the alcohol route next time.

dolface, any particular tips for drying them out between the soak and rubbing alcohol stages? Or is it not necessary?

EDIT: Thanks Hyper...I edited it...:D

well, i shake them out really well after i take them out of the water, then do the alcohol, then slide them on.

the grips i use have holes in the ends, so i figure that the alcohol/water mixture evaporates pretty quickly, but i don't do anything special to hurry the process along.

windex works wonders. It slid on fairly easily and dried rightaway.

If soad=soap
Dolface never mentioned the use of soap.
The rubbing alcohol takes the place of soap.

Then again, if soad=soak
Ignore me.

FYI, a guy in Portland told me that compressed air's the best way to get 'em off, as well. I couldn't really visualize what he was talking about, but he said that you wedge the compressor hose under the grip and bang, off they come.

if you're using windex, make sure you don't have cuts on your hand... I tried it with just warm water first, scraped some skin off my palms and when the windex amonia hit that spot, well i don't need to tell you how good it felt. It reminded me of that day, when i worked at a sandwich shop, that i cut my finger on the slicer and then tried to clean the windows of the display case. no good.

Or just do it the patented Jack way. Eat pavement on your side and tear a big ace hole in the side. Comes off quicker than a prom dress.

If you roll it off, make sure you don't roll it inside out. I had a ***** of a time trying to get the thing back on or even back to being the correct side out.

Rubber cement !

The vapors expand the grips that they go on easy and you can pull them up higher on the bars if you want. the glue keeps it on too. 79 cent can is cheaper and drys quickly.

Just like the post above you should roll them but stop short about 1 inch from the end and pull off.

no way to what is usually euphamistically called 'personal lubricant'. the rest of us call it astroglide or sylk or [insert name of favorite lube here].

if it's water-based (and if it's not, don't be using latex condoms with it!) it'll dry out

Ceya

Rubber Cement guys , I am telling you.

Keirin racers and builders are using it and I was impress how easy it is to put on the bars.

No fuss ,no strain (Yes, I have seen guys suffering).

yeah, sure...eventually. i've got some aqua-lube under my grips right now--used it to get them off, didn't wipe them down enough, and slid them back on. there's one spot that i'm still able to slide around after two weeks.

hey, i believe you: it'll dry out, but not as fast as some other compounds that are not specifically designed as lubricants (e.g., hairspray).

When using rubber cement.. Do you aply it the the inside of the grip or the bar? Both? If you put it on the grip, do you leave it on for a little before putting the grip on? And when I put on bmx grips, I hammer the end of the grip and they go on.. I may try that in this case too.

Start at the opening of the grip and work your way to the bottom .

You will see the grip slightly expanding open, this due to vapors in the cement.

No hammering at all. Slide on till you get it completely on.

Just gotta add, score one for Ceya! I didn't have any rubbing alcohol in the house so I rummaged around and found a bottle of rubber cement. I dabbed enough down into the grips (Strong G) to cover most of the way down the inside of the grip. Then I started sliding them onto my bars (Deda alu Pista) and initially they slid on super easy! Then it took a little work to get them the rest of the way but compared to some grips I've installed on mountain bars with alcohol, these were cake! Plus now three hours later they are stuck as hell, no sliding around at all like with soap and water.

Thanks Ceya!

I actually just got one for the first time in 2 years when I moved into a new place a month ago. I always buy one when I get to a new place.. it breaks.. I buy one when I get to a new place.
