General Cycling Discussion - Can I borrow your bike box?

Is there anyone in NE Kansas with a bike box they will not be using over Christmas that they would be willing to lend to a neighbor? I know it seems like an odd request, but I simply cannot afford one right now. I am thinking about building one, but don't have time between now and my departure (22nd). I am flying to Colorado and would like to take my bike.

Call the local LBS and ask them to save you a box with all the packing material. Should be free. Confirm with your airline if tis is acceptable.

Go with a free cardboard one from your LBS, or if the airline sells them, they shouldn't be anything more than $20. I've used both of those options on a number of occasions.

If you must have a hardshell case, call around to your LBSs and see if you can rent one. The two times I've used hardshell cases, I've rented them for $5/day.

If both of those options don't work for you, check the "Sell and Swap" section of your local cycling association's webpage and see if someone there has a box for rent.

Great ideas, thanks. I was planning on starting with a box from the LBS to build a proper hard case. It hadn't occured to me that it would simply work on its own. I'll mummify it in packing tape.

Don't get too carried away with the tape ... they may want to look inside the box before putting it on the plane. I've flown all over the place with mine in a cardboard box with just enough tape to hold the thing shut, and it has been fine.
