View Full Version : Bonehead of the week

In my attempt to pull at least one bonehead move every week, I offer this weeks' entry.
I had trouble making eye contact with a van at an intersection today. He pulls out and sees me at the last second. I, being a little slow to recognize that he hasn't seen me, squeeze the brakes at the last minute and pull a very nice sideways, skidding, heart pounding stop. I look up and the driver is laughing at me. I am pissed off and decide that (mostly because of adrenilin) I will throw a water bottle at the van. I throw an awkward, accurate shot at the side door and thump the van. My back tweeks and now I'm moving gingerly.
Yes, mistakes happen. Not eceryone is as fine a driver as I.
But don't laugh at me...or I'll hurt myself and show you.
Signed,
Mr. Mature

I'm not laughing at you...I'm laughing with you. I hate it when I hurt myself doing stupid things.

Amazing how many bonehead things we do all the time! If I had a nickle for every bonehead move I had ever made,I wouldn't have to be at work right now, I would be on the beach somewhere soaking up the sun.

Let me be the nasty guy here for a second

It all is a bit funny but I see it far too often.

Just imagine if you got hit by the van being your fault. Truth is you would get a lawyer and sue the guy. Being your fault bikes usually win. Now tey guy went through a scare that day with you and now financial loss because of your 'bone head' actions.

Normally it stops here. However I see far too many bike riders get sue happy and start to go after the bike shops and manufacturers for items damaged in the accident. Stupid, but I see it very often.

Just my 2 cents in the issue as I have ridden with many 'bone heads' and have had to call quite a bit of ambulances and fill out reports in my many years riding.

Sure, I've done a few bone-headed things in my life on a bike; while practicing my sprints, I was pulled over by a cop for speeding (32 in a 20), and I told him to 'piss-off'. The thing I won't do, however, is sue for my idiocy. Just because I'm a moron doesn't mean that I have a right to break everybody else's bank to pay for my stupidity. The American legal system is supposed to protect the victims, not the victimizers (i.e.- the lady who spilled coffee on her lap & sued McDonalds).

That's my 2c.

I agree with you 100%

However it turns out that when injured in such an accident bill will pile up. Soon you find yourself needing to sue someone to help cover the medical costs for your 'bone head' actions.

Xavier's post reminds me of an incident at an organized century a little over a year ago. A cyclist is bombing down a long, straight hill that he's never ridden before at ~45-50 mph. At the bottom the road makes a right turn, and then cuts hard left across a bridge. He didn't quite make that hard left and got beat up pretty bad. Who's to blame for that riders injuries? Long story short, despite the rider having signed release forms, etc., the organizers of the century were sued, although I think it was by the riders medical insurance company, not the rider.

So, peewee03, even though you wouldn't sue for your stupidity, someone else might!

What did the genius do after you hit his van with the bottle?
That's usually the kind of clown who wants to fight.

I hope it's nothing serious with your back.

The back is okay. I got about 45 miles in on some nice quiet backroads today. The club is doing the annual "Tour De Tarantula" this weekend and I'm sure I'll have forgotten this weeks' bonehead move and start working on my next "Wiley Coyote (Super-genius)" move.
