A nearby shop just happened to have some Miche cogs and lockrings, and I need a lockring, so I grabbed one.

Now I'm wondering if it's compatible with a Kogswell/normal/not Italian hub - in the shop I thought they were all the same, but I remember something different about Campy and Phil cogs and lockrings. The shop had no idea, not doing any track stuff at all and only having them because someone special ordered them and never bought them.

Can I use it on my Kogswell or not? I mean safely, without eating threads etc? I don't have another to compare it to, and I can't remember what the threading on the DA one currently on my bike is.

miche is italian threaded, like Campy and Phil

Kogswell should be threaded like shimano/suzue/etcetcetc..

I knew there was a catch. Too bad too, as they have some Miche cogs for 15$ cdn, and I was ready to invest in the Miche system just because I wouldn't have to mail order it.

Or can I actually use the Miche cogs, and just not the lockrings?

Can anyone else corroborate?

Good thing I have the receipt.

you can use the miche cogs
it's just the *lockring* threading that's different

And the lockrings are hard to get off...I just tried to take mine off the NOS Fuji Pro I bought. The lockring tool could not get a good grip and was damaging the lockring.

I took it to my local Track specific bike shop and his first several attempts did not get it off either. He is going to hit it later and give me an update.

I might have you get me a few of those cheapies as replacements if I keep damaging the lockring every time I take it off.

aha!!! get that man a prize!!!!
The Park HCW-5 is what I was sold for lockrings. 2 different LBS's said it would work.

Is there a better(and not to expensive) option?

yeah the curve on the park is bad. maybe it works better on BB lockrings. idunno, I got rid of mine pretty quick.
try sticking a penny or a washer between the lockring and the curve of the tool. it should make it slip a little less.

otherwise, people have had luck with the Hozan spanner, I think the "modified" version that sheldon sells is liked even more. they should be about $20
I want some Hozan lockring pliers, but I don't think i can justify the $45 pricetag.
