I was in PB yesterday, and handed back to them the two 10% discount cards I had received in the mail. This whole 'our price'/'sale price' thing is worthless. I had a long conversation with the manager (I've known him for a while now), and confirmed that there's new management out in Carolina and they are trying to 're-train' their customers not to count on 'deals' anymore. I know I'm using air quotes a lot in this post, but they suit the tone. My membership is no longer worth the $30 a year I pay for it. You may have noticed as well the blitz Nash-Formance is putting on the web - Hell, I saw a Nashbar ad on Chainlove.com just this morning.

Not pleased, and shopping elsewhere. The only bargain left there are the Forte Titan wheels and the odd double points on a specific brand campaigns.

Hope I'm not alone here.

That makes sense. I've been noticing the last few coupons from Performance haven't applied to on-sale items. I still compare prices between retailers and will buy from Performance when it makes sense to do so, but I agree that this may make their Team Membership less appealing to some people.

Guess it will depend on how much stuff you buy during the year that is still cheaper at Performance even without their coupons than at other retailers, and if the amount you spend on those items gives you more cash back than the cost of the membership... Any mathematicians out there? :(

I was a Team Performance member since almost the start. I didn't renew this year. They increased the membership fee and the rebate stopped making sense. Performance regular pricing is usually higher than what you can find elsewhere and some of their sale prices haven't been so great either.

Remember when Best Buy actually used to be a good buy? It seems like they and Performance have slowly turned up the prices and there are fewer real deals to be found.

In much fairness, Performance continues to offer great service (for the most part), selection, and some good deals if you watch carefully for the sales.

i have a performance bike shop near my house. Are there any walk in coupons that can be used? maybe like a print out or something? thanks

I haven't seen print-and-use coupons from PB in a while. If you get on their mailing list they send some every once in a while.

You can try applying a coupon to an item online and then asking the store to price-match it. Not guaranteed to be a success.

When is a "Sale" not a sale? When you jack the price up and offer a 15% "discount" and the new net is much higher than the previous "standard" price. Is that what they teach in marketing 101?

Ti Guy:
I'm not sure it's marketing 101, but yes, what you've described is certainly a pricing strategy. It's well known by marketers (of which I am one) that many people can be swayed to buy something not because it's a good value, but because it seems like a such a good value compared to the "regular" price.

You're not one to be attracted by Performance's strategy and neither am I. I used to like Performance a bunch but not so much these days because I don't have time to play pricing games and watch and analyze their sales - they seem to have gotten worse (larger swings) over the last few years. I'd much rather just find a place that charges a fair price all the time and accept that sometimes I could get a "deal" elsewhere but avoid the hassle.

Yes, I think that is a really good deal, too. The Ultegra parts alone are probably worth at least $400. Would make a great training/crit bike.

Or it is the wrong link to the bike or they changed the price asap.

I don't know about you all, but when I'm going to buy something online, I'll buy from where I can get it cheapest at the time I'm going to buy it, regardless of whether the item is on "sale" or at "regular" price or whatever. I'm not gonna shun Performance in general because they have huge price swings. Who cares? If it's cheaper there on any given day, of course I'll buy from there. If not, then I won't. Pretty simple.

Performance has phased out coupon codes. Corporate management felt customers were relying too much on coupons. Yeah, it sucks. They still have good sales that come up. You gotta be on the lookout for them a bit. It sucks, but it seems like coupons won't be around for the foreseeable future. :(

So instead of the high-low pricing strategy they used to have, they now have a high-high strategy? Disappointing. :(

Check my history of posts and you'll see I used to be big on Performance. But it was about 2 years ago or so their pricing and frequent shopper program stopped making sense.

Again, disappointing.
