Today was the first day I had where road tires just had no place being on the road. With the 4 or so inches of unplowed snow and car tracks the side streets I normally ride where just unridable. I went about 2 blocks and gave up and walked to the largest nearby road where it was plowed. Those were the most exhausting 2 blocks I've ever ridden with the front tire jumping back and forth like 6 inches at a time. Maybe time for some mountain bike tires afterall.

Just your normal old school 27x1 1/4 on a 70's schwinn. I wouldn't ride a bike any nicer in that stuff.

Even on Nokian studs I had a hard time on the greasy un-plowed crap that fell last night. I don't think any tire can deal with a half foot of it.

I gotta say, when I got to work today I was covered--head-to-toe--in slush. It was actually pretty funny.

Studded 700c tires make a big difference in those conditions. Both narrow slicks and studded tires cut down to something solid in light snow but where slicks just slip on the hard surface studs seem to get grip in most conditions. Still rutted streets are nearly impassable with narrow tires.

What was really miserable wasn't the slush, but the fact that the snow pack would break up and send my front tire one way, and my rear tire the other. I really enjoyed the ride through the snow. Fixed gear in the snow is so awesome. Going to let the snow settle some more and try the Greenway just to see it.
One of the best things is it was too warm for the black ice. I love my Nokians

Yeah that's exactly what was happening to me. I'd break through the snow and suddenly my wheels where like 6 inches of out plane with each other. Quite a battle to fight them back and keep going in the direction you want.
